Middle College News
Second week!
We made it through our second week!
Hello, students and families!
I won't be sending newsletters every week, but there's so much going on at the start of school and we want to be sure everyone is on the same page.
We are still making schedule changes as needed, but the last day to do so is Tuesday, Aug. 30. After that date, schedules are pretty much locked in for the rest of the semester.
We are excited to have Mayra Rios filling in as our staff assistant. Her hours for now will be 11:00-3:00 Monday-Thursday. She can be reached at 306-3120 and at riosm@smccd.edu.

End of Orientation
Two students, Chelsea and Autumn, from Phi Theta Kappa presented curriculum from a federally-mandated campus safety awareness campaign as well as resources here on campus that students can access for help. Additionally, they invited students to join PTK; currently, the meetings are from 2-3pm on Thursdays in the STEM center, but they will change the time to accommodate MC students if needed.
And the start of classes
For our daily schedules, students have CCR or Advisory from 12:30-1:15. Second period is either English or social studies from 1:20-2:10. Third period is from 2:15-3:05 and is either English or social studies. All students meet with their advisors on Wednesdays in the first period instead of in CCR. For CCR, they meet with one CCR teacher on Mondays and Tuesdays, and the other CCR teacher on Thursdays and Fridays.
Juniors
CCR 1: Since this class is all about helping students successfully transition from high school to college, Marin started with the importance of using the college course syllabi and gleaning all the critical information contained on each. Jen P gave each junior their high school transcript and started explaining the various requirements -- SUHSD graduation, A-G college eligibility, and IGETC college general education. Knowledge is power, and we're giving students the vocabulary they need to navigate the path from high school to college.
English 3: Jen B is starting with the American Dream, which will be the guiding theme throughout the year and across all units.
US History: Halo is starting with our nation's founding ideals, examining the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.
Seniors
CCR 2: In Jen B's class, seniors were visited by a recent MC graduate who is currently at UCLA. She talked about her transition to a large university from MC, her application process, and how students can make the most of their time in MC and at Cañada. Halo is reviewing with students their safety-target-reach schools so they can make informed decisions about where to apply.
English 4: For the first unit, students are thinking about who they are. Jen P is working up to a narrative on identity, which is designed to lead into the personal statements they'll start working on in CCR later.
Government: Marin is also talking with seniors about identity, but is focusing on political ideology. Students took a survey to discover their personal political typology.
