Community Accommodations: To Request an Interpreter or Not?

During this session, Lindsay Chandler will discuss the processes and struggles of requesting sign language interpreters for activities outside of a child's school day. It is ALWAYS a child's right to have access to communication. Topics of discussion include the following:
- How to approach businesses about needing a sign language interpreter,
- How to help the business throughout the process of requesting an interpreter, and
- How to resource creatively when requesting a sign language interpreter.
Managing Childhood Hearing Loss: Audiological Needs of Children

This presentation is designed to help parents understand the importance of consistent amplification use and to empower parents' confidence in manipulating the various technologies available to children with hearing differences. Dr. White will review the importance of wearing hearing aids/cochlear implants routinely for maximum speech and language development, and she will discuss strategies to improve retention and compliance. Participants will spend time reviewing basic hearing aid care and maintenance, manufacturer warranties, and simple troubleshooting steps to ensure proper functioning.
Mental Health and Safety for DHH Children and Youth

"Alexa, can you please fast forward to 2022?" How many times, as parents or guardians, have you found yourself saying, "This isn’t the world I grew up in! I don’t recognize the world we live in today?” Most likely, we all have.
In this one-hour session, Mr. Thornton and Ms. Vassalo will facilitate a discussion on topics that school-aged, deaf/hard-of-hearing students are faced with every day including the following:
- What does this world look like from the perspective of students who are deaf/hard-of-hearing?
- How can we support students as they experience the stressors of a constantly changing world?
Mr. Jacob Thornton and Ms. Laurie Vassallo are Licensed Professional Counselors who provide mental health counseling services to deaf and hard of hearing students in the Dallas Regional Day School Program for the Deaf.

How the Deaf Action Center Serves the Family

This program will focus on local resources available for families, youth, and children through the Deaf Action Center in Dallas. Parents will learn about the Youth Education Transition Services (YETS) referral process and the important role parents play throughout this process. The Deaf Action Center is a resource for parents, youth, children, adults, and educators.
