Hosford Middle School
April 15th - 19th
Neurodiversity
Our sixth grade learning center students made a wonderful new display in the library celebrating Neurodiveristy. In addition to picking out the books, the students made cards talking about neurodiversity to put in the books and on the display. Big thanks to Ms. Alfrey and her students!
Ms. Marht & Ms. Fleming
This week we will have advisory lessons and a guest speaker that center on neurodiversity and perspective taking. Perspective taking is foundational to experiencing empathy toward others.
We know that middle school is a difficult time for students who identify as neurodivergent. We want all students to come to Hosford MS and experience a warm and inclusive environment.
Unfortunately, sometimes we see differences, especially when it comes to neurodiversity, resulting in harassment or bullying. This is not acceptable. When this happens, we work diligently to interrupt and teach about the expectations and the skills students need to be empathetic.
We do this to help students gain empathy and an understanding of differences as an asset. Then, kindness and compassion may be fully embraced and expressed.
If you'd like to continue the conversation at home, please read the article linked above titled, What is neurodiversity? and have a dinner time conversations about what it is. Then, talk about the assembly that will take place on Wednesday.
Thank you for your support.

Summer Reading Volunteer Opportunity
Multnomah County Library Summer Reading Volunteer Applications open April 15
Do you want to inspire people to read this summer? Volunteer with the MCL Summer Reading program! As a volunteer, you will help people sign up for the game, award prizes, talk with people about books, and more. All volunteers need to fill out an application, which will be available on this page and at all library locations on April 15. Volunteer shifts begin on June 16 and end on August 31. The Belmont Library will not have summer reading volunteers this year, but Woodstock Library and Hollywood Library will.
Questions? Ask in the library!
Ms. Caleal and baby stopped by for a visit!!
Reminders
Tardy, Late After Tardy, Absent
The information below is to help parents understand their child's attendance in ParentVue.
If the student arrives after the bell but within the first 25% of class, that is considered a Tardy (L)
If the student arrives after 25% of the class is over, but before 75% of the class is over, that is considered a Late After Tardy (LAT). It will count as an absence for accounting purposes but shows that they were present in class.
If the student arrives after 75% of the class is over, they are to be marked Absent (A).
For our 50-minutes class periods:
0-12 minutes late = L
13-37 minutes late = LAT
38+ minutes late = A
Please check your child's attendance in ParentVue and review it with your child. If you have any questions, please let us know.
After the art room was vandalized, these poles were painted black. Then, Ms. Kaman and students began planning. This is an on-going work in progress. We can't wait to see what they turn it into.
Belmont Library Branch Rebuild
Multnomah County Library's Belmont branch is being rebuilt. The Belmont Library design project would love neighborhood input for the next phase of the design.
- Public voting for Belmont Library's interior color will be underway from April 1-15. Please vote either in person at Belmont Library and online on the design project page.
- There will be an open house on Thursday, April 11 from 5-7pm at Belmont Library with the design team to share updates about the project. It's also an opportunity to vote.
Thanks for participating!
8th Grade Chaperones Needed!
College Visit or Job Shadowing June 4th & 6th
Hello families!
This year all 8th grade students in PPS will be participating in a capstone experience at either a college visit or job site shadowing day. Then, students will complete a written reflection to demonstrate their learning.
Students were surveyed to share their preferences for job shadowing or the college visit. Choices were Portland Center Stage, IBEW Electrical Union, a real estate firm, a farm and a visit to Oregon State University!
In order to accommodate these various trips, we are looking for a minimum of 10-15 chaperones.
Details:
All chaperones must have a current PPS background check and be available for the entire trip (likely the whole school day).
Here is the district information about getting cleared to participate
Trips will be either June 4th or June 6th.
All attempts will be made to place you with your child/family member/student and if that isn’t possible we will let you know ahead of time.
Please fill out this form if you are interested and we will reach out with more information!
Sincerely,
The 8th Grade Team at Hosford
HOSFORD PTSA MEMBERS CREATE COMMUNITY
As your child transitions to Middle School, it may seem like they can do more and more without you. And while that *may* be true- remember the school still needs you just as much- maybe even more!
Please join the Hosford PTSA. We have plenty of small and large volunteer opportunities (and shhhh....your kid will never know you are volunteering!) The PTSA organizes after school programs and student events. The PTA runs a website, Facebook page and Facebook Parent's group and google group. PTA raises funds through fundraisers and memberships. The PTA funds teacher grants, student groups and activities, and helps the counseling team with resources to direct services for our community (Hosford Resiliency Fund).
We have positions open for next year, and everyone is welcome and invited to join. Do you have questions? Email ptsahosford@gmail.com.
Do you want to be a hero? We have a special ask for PTA Secretary!
