Nurse Notes
Regardless of the grade, accidents happen during the day: milk spilling at lunch, mud/wet conditions on the playground, toileting accidents, etc. Please pack an extra change of clothes in your child’s backpacks for these unexpected mishaps. If your child does need to borrow any clothes from the clinic, please launder and return to the clinic as soon as possible.
The clinic could use pants for both boys and girls. Any donation would be much appreciated.
Thank you!
Nurse Jenny
Dear HPE parents,
From time to time, a case of head lice is reported to the school throughout the year. Should a case of head lice be brought to the school’s attention, the school nurse will maintain confidentiality of the student’s identity and assist the staff and parents with educational material. While the odds of your son or daughter developing a case of head lice are relatively small, the following includes useful information on head lice and the signs and symptoms.
Head Lice Information
- Head Lice are small parasitic insects that can be found on the heads of people.
- Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp.
- Head lice and head lice nits are found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head.
- Head lice cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl
- Head lice are spread by direct head‐to‐head contact
- Head lice are rarely spread by contact with clothing or personal items (such as combs, brushes, hats or coats)
- Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness
- Head lice are not known to spread disease.
Signs and symptoms of head lice infestation
- Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair
- Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse
- Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark
- Sores on the head caused by scratching
If your child exhibits signs and symptoms of head lice infestation, you should examine your
child’s head (especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck) for crawling lice and nits. If crawling lice and/or nits have been found, all household members should be examined for head lice and/or nits every 3‐4 days. Persons with live (crawling) lice or nits within ¼ inch or less of the scalp should be treated.
For more information on head lice and treatment go to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) web site at http://www.cdc.gov
Please be aware that we (HPE staff) do not disclose the name of the student, name of the teacher nor grade level to other families in order to provide student/family confidentiality. We do ask that if your child does have lice, please notify the school and those individuals/families that your child has been in close contact with.
Counselor's Corner
Dear HPE Families!
As caregivers, it’s natural to want to protect our children from hurt or disappointment. However, allowing your elementary-aged child to experience small disappointments can be incredibly beneficial for their growth. Here’s why:
Building Resilience: Facing setbacks helps children learn that disappointments are a natural part of life. With your guidance, they develop the ability to bounce back and try again.
Emotional Regulation: When children experience and navigate disappointment, they learn to understand and manage their emotions. This skill is crucial for handling challenges later in life.
Problem-Solving Skills: Disappointments often encourage kids to think creatively about overcoming obstacles, fostering a growth mindset where challenges are seen as opportunities to learn.
Enhanced Empathy and Understanding: Experiencing setbacks can help children become more empathetic, as they recognize that everyone faces difficulties sometimes.
Increased Appreciation for Success: When success is earned through persistence and effort after setbacks, achievements can feel even more rewarding.
Rather than shielding your child from every disappointment, consider these moments as learning opportunities. Support them by acknowledging their feelings, discussing what went wrong, and brainstorming ways to handle similar situations in the future. Over time, these experiences help your child develop confidence and resilience that will serve them well throughout life.
Have a great weekend!

Social and Emotional Learning
KINDERGARTEN
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will practice two kind acts: asking, “Would you like to share?” and “Would you like a hug?”
Try This at Home: Encourage your child to offer to share items at home. For example, have them help you make a snack and then offer to share it with other family members. Encourage them to offer hugs to family members or friends when they are tired or sad or need encouragement.
1ST GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn and practice two types of kind acts: offering to help someone and inviting someone to join.
Try This at Home: Help your child think of a kind act they can do for someone involving offering to help or inviting them to join. Support your child in carrying out the kind act.
2ND GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn that empathy means feeling or understanding what someone else is feeling, and that empathy can lead to kindness.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to tell you what empathy means.
3rd GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how acting on empathy can make friendships stronger.
Try This at Home: Ask your child to name one of their friends and explain what makes them a good friend.
4th GRADE
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn what it means to rethink a situation and how it can help them calm strong emotions.
Try This at Home: Tell your child about a time when rethinking a situation, or thinking about it in a different way, helped you feel better. Encourage your child to talk about times in their lives when rethinking could have helped them.

Transportation Change During the Day
Occasionally, parents must make unplanned transportation changes during the school day. All telephone calls must be received by 12:00 pm.
