Center Community Chat
April 12, 2024
Dear Families,
Another action packed week at Center. A huge shout of thanks to our 2nd grade students who presented their family cultural projects at School Committee. They represented us well!
We successfully completed our first week of MCAS. Our 3rd and 4th grade students put forth their best effort and all other students showed their PRIDE by being extra quiet in the hallways.
It was so fun carrying on the Ziti Supper tradition! 4th grade students were very attentive and polite as they waited on members of the Center community. Thank you to the numerous volunteers who ensured this was a big success.
Parking at Pick Up
Please do not block a parked car at pick up time. We ask for you patience and that you remain in your car until a marked space becomes available. Several of our staff members have not been able to leave at their scheduled time as their cars have been blocked by someone here for pick up.
Staff Updates
It is with mixed emotions that we share that Colleen Marino is transferring to Parker next year to teach 5th grade math and science. We are happy for her as she can focus on two subjects she is passionate about and have a work schedule that works better for her family. She has contributed much to Center both as a Center parent and colleague and we will miss her!
Congratulations to Claire Yankopoulos and her family on the birth of Anna. Mom and baby are doing well. Ann Sevigny, well-known to Center as a valued substitute teacher here for the last 3 years will be filling her role.
Victoria Carnevale will be joining Center as an additional EL teacher, starting August, 2024. She will be supporting all 4 elementary schools. Ms. Carnevale has been the EL teacher at Parker for the last six years and has eleven years of experience working with multilingual learners. She also holds a mathematics and elementary certification (1-6) . She is looking forward to utilizing her expertise at the elementary level.

Placement Process
Our placement process for the upcoming 2024--2025 school year is beginning and will take place over several weeks. This process is truly a team effort that involves input from school personnel and student data gathered over time. We put great care into the decisions that are made. All information is reviewed by the present grade level teachers, reading teachers, special education teachers, counselors, principals and other appropriate personnel so that we can be confident that classroom make ups are conducive to learning.
When creating classrooms, it is important that we are mindful of the needs of our students across grade levels. Individual classes need to strike the delicate balance between overall range of abilities, learning styles, special needs, conduct and appropriate combinations of students. Final lists are reviewed very carefully to ensure we have used our collective professional judgment to place each child appropriately in a well-balanced class. Our goal at Center is to provide a learning environment that meets the needs of the whole child and placement is a key factor in realizing this goal. Your input in the process is gladly accepted. If you feel that there is additional information of which we should be aware in placing your child for next year, please complete the following form by Monday, May 6, 2024. Please submit this to the principal even if you have discussed your preferences or concerns with the teacher or shared the same preference in a previous year. Please keep in mind that we are unable to honor requests for individual teachers, or input received after May 6, 2024. Submissions containing such requests will not be considered.
Thank you for your involvement and continued partnership in your child's education at Center.

Kindergarten Registration
As a reminder, we will be holding a second kindergarten registration day for families who have an incoming kindergarten student for the 2024/25 school year on Thursday, April 25th from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. If you were unable to attend the first registration day in January, please be sure to sign up for an appointment at your designated school. I encourage you to share this information with families you know who have their first child eligible to enroll in kindergarten for the 2024/25 school year. Completing the registration process during these registration dates provides us with accurate enrollment numbers to help plan for students prior to the beginning of the school year. Thank you in advance for your support. For more information about registration and contact information, please visit the kindergarten registration page on our website.
Enjoy the break.
Warm Regards,
Dianna and Donna

Counselor's Corner
Dear Center School Families,
Many elementary age children need support with making transitions at home. I would like to share an article from The Child Mind Institute called, “How Can We Help Kids With Transitions?”, which offers practical tips for helping kids to handle transitions more easily. The author, Katherine Martinelli, believes that with support children can learn to change gears without whining and tantrums. Please, find a link to the article here: https://childmind.org/article/how-can-we-help-kids-with-transitions/
