Happy Summer, Wildcats!
Michigan Seal of Biliteracy
For the first time in Wayland Union Schools' history, we have a graduating senior who has earned the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy. The Seal of Biliteracy represents a student who exhibits language proficiency in English and at least one additional world language. The Seal may be awarded to any student receiving a high school diploma, a high school certificate of completion, or a high school equivalency certificate and who has demonstrated Intermediate High Proficiency on acceptable world language assessments. Faviola Ramirez, a member of the Class of 2024, has earned this distinction for being fluent in both English and Spanish. In the future, Faviola hopes to work in healthcare as a Spanish-speaking radiation tech. Faviola is grateful for her teachers who have encouraged her throughout her educational career, including our ELL Coordinator, Dalee Nwimo. Faviola offers parting wisdom to younger bilingual students, “don’t be ashamed of where your family comes from and what language they speak. It is a huge part of who you are and where you come from.” Congratulations Faviola, your future is bright!

Steeby 3rd Graders Reach Goals
What happens when you bring together WWE and Reflex Math? A motivating data wall in the 3rd grade hall at Steeby. A common essential standard states that by the end of 3rd grade, students will know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers. We started the year with less than 15% fluency in multiplication and division 0-10. Data was reviewed every two weeks throughout the year to see how close we were getting. We ended the year with more than 85% of our 3rd grade students reaching 80% fluency and almost half of the 3rd grade class reached 100% fluency. When students reached 80%, their picture with the WWE belt was hung in the hall. When they reached 100%, they were able to add a 100% sticker to their photo.
Guest Reader
Dr. Delsa Chapman, Deputy Superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education, read to Mrs. Jurkowski and Mr. Tetreault's classrooms today as part of a literacy initiative at the state level. She read the book Nana's Summertime Treats by Sharon Rogers. It was enjoyed by all.
End of the Year Fun
At the end of every year, Mrs. Shafer sends her class off to the next grade by spelling out the next grade over 8 days, assigning a letter to each day with some special events. Her class held their Fourth Grade Countdown with activities like: Friendship Day, Oreo/Oranges/Olives Day, Unique Craft Day, Read in Tents Day, Too Much Going On Day, How to Draw Day, Game Day, and lastly Relay Day. Students have fun experiences each day with their classmates and friends, creating memories to carry them on to the next year!
