No School Monday
This is a friendly reminder that there is no school for students and staff on Monday, February 17th.
Volley for a Cause
Hastings Middle School and Jones Middle School are working together on a service learning project to promote belonging. In anticipation of our Volley for a Cause game in April, we are selling spirit wear. Students and staff will have opportunities to sport their purchases during spirit weeks, at the game, and more. A portion of each item purchased will be donated to Special Olympics and Best Buddies.
All items will be delivered to the school you choose on your order form. Anticipated delivery date is March 12th. The store closes on February 23rd. Please be sure to place your orders before the deadline. We will not be able to extend this date.
Our yearbook sale is LIVE!
- We will be selling yearbooks online from now until February 28th. In order for students to get their yearbooks before the end of the year, we need to have all orders placed by the due date. We cannot accept any late orders, so please be sure to order now!
- Yearbooks will be delivered to Hastings and passed out in advisory. In the last week of school teachers set aside time for students to sign yearbooks and share memories together
- Place your order at book.hrimaging.com
- Yearbooks are $40

House 7 Gold-Star House Service Project
The students and teachers of House 7 Gold are excited about their service project with the Star House. Beginning Monday, February 3 through February 14, we are collecting supplies for the Star House, a youth and young adult center that provides various services for homeless youth. We are collecting new socks, reusable water bottles, toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc..), new or gently used winter coats, rain ponchos, and jackets as well as new and gently used men's and women's clothing (for ages 14-24/sizes adult small and up). Students can bring the items in and drop them off in their classrooms.
Service Hours
There are two ways any Hastings student can earn service hours supporting the Star House service learning project.
If you do extra chores around the house and earn money to purchase toiletries or new socks, you may count the time spent doing chores. All the money you earn must be spent for Star House supplies in order for it to count as service hours.
If you spend time at your house (with an adult) sorting through items to donate, you may count that time.
When you enter the hours, you must use an adult in your home as the verification contact. In addition, you need to explain in the reflection section exactly what you did and how you earned the hours.

Service Hours Information
Middle School students in Upper Arlington are asked to complete five hours of community service each year. If your child is volunteering anywhere this year or even just out shoveling a neighbor’s driveway (and not getting paid), those things count toward hours.
The information about community service and logging hours is on the Hastings website: https://hastings.uaschools.org/academic-program/community-service
We will be working with students to help them log hours later this month. Students should see their grade level counselor if they have questions.
Juvenile Law and Sexting 101
Each year at Hastings we partner with the Franklin County Prosecuting Office to come in and talk with our students about Juvenile Laws, Sexting Laws and Online Safety. This year, on February 18th 2024, the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Irene Knapp will be joining us to talk with our students about these issues. Each grade level will listen to the presentation in school during their enrichment period. Please feel free to check out this flier that shares more about what will be discussed. If you have any questions and/or concerns about this presentation, please reach out to your grade level counselor.
The students will then have a follow up conversation on some of the topics covered during their advisory period on February 21st, 2025, to ensure that students have understood and absorbed the key content from the presentation.
If you want to opt your student out of the presentation, and the follow up conversation, please click here.
Counseling Intern
Mrs. Chloe Perry will be working on her counseling internship and practicum this spring and next year. At this time, Mrs. Perry will be primarily sitting in on meetings and observing, but as the semester progresses she will begin taking a more active role with students. (Her process is similar to that of a student teacher in a classroom.)

Supporting Students During Ramadan
Ramadan will begin on February 28 and last through March 29 this year. We understand that some aspects of the regular school day are more challenging for students who are fasting in observance of Ramadan. Please contact Penny Stires to discuss support for your student during this time.
Spring Break Food Distribution
Throughout February, families can sign up to receive groceries for the children in their household over spring break. The Tri-Village Packers, a group of community volunteers, coordinate this program. We would like to ensure every family who would benefit has an opportunity to register. Please see the linked flyer for more information.Helpful Links
