A message from the principal
Next week is staff appreciation week. I want to take a few moments to call out our amazing faculty- teachers, specialists, office staff, para-educators, nurse, custodians, bus drivers and lunchroom staff. Our PTA has some amazing celebrations planned. What you may not know is that the little things matter. If your child wants to make a card or picture for one or more staff members, they would be deeply appreciated.
Fun COVID story and the return to normalcy....... when second graders were told about their field trip to the zoo, the children had no "schema," no frame of reference. Some of their remarks were, "We're going on a ROAD TRIP?" "Is the bus going to pick me up at home and take me to the zoo so I can meet you there?" Imagine their shock when they found out they were going to eat LUNCH there!
SBA testing begins this week for third graders. Third grade families have been notified of the timing and process.
I'm looking for a few people with carpenter skills to help me build some shelves in our emergency shed. (I'm creating a shed to store supplies that we might need if we had to evacuate the building for an extended period of time). If you know someone with those skills, that would be wonderful! (No finish carpentry skills are necessary. If you have tools, that would be an added bonus!!!) We will be creating an Amazon wish-list to help us gather supplies that are complementary to our wonderful emergency suitcases. Stay tuned!
Have a fabulous weekend.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bond

Message from Mrs. Leslie....
Hello Lake Tapps Families,
Over the last couple of weeks I visited each classroom at Lake Tapps to share a lesson about friendship. The students and I talked about typical behaviors associated with friendship that can be helpful: talking, cooperating, joking. We also discussed that sometimes those behaviors can shift into something that can be hurtful: bossing others, talking behind someone’s back, or mean jokes that can hurt. The students did a great job identifying the hurtful vs. helpful behaviors. We then reviewed our problem solving strategies: students have power and control in being Peaceful Problem Solvers. Each class was able to offer many ideas of how to solve problems, including Rock, Paper, Scissors, Taking Turns, and using “I-messages''. All students practiced “I-messages'' with different scenarios. For example, if my friend pushed me when we were playing TAG, I would say, “I felt angry and hurt when you pushed me during TAG. I would like to play the two-finger-touch rule or play something different.” This three step statement has been incredibly helpful for students as we work through conflict.
Thank you for sharing your kiddo(s) every day with us. If anything comes up that you need support with, never hesitate to reach out! Don’t forget to send in images of your student sharing their creativity! :)

The Sun is Out - Yay!
Families, you may send sunscreen to school with your student without a doctor’s note, in order to avoid sunburns, under the following district policy/procedure:
Over-the-counter topical sunscreen products may be possessed and used by students, parents, and school staff, without a written prescription or note from a licensed healthcare provider, if the following conditions are met:
The product is regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration as an over-the-counter sunscreen product; and
If possessed by a student, the product is provided to the student by their parent or guardian.
Students who possess over-the-counter topical sunscreen products that meet the above criteria may carry up to 8 ounces at a time, preferably with the container in a plastic bag.
Students may not share sunscreen; they must bring their own. Please take some time to teach your child how to apply their sunscreen safely.
Thank you,
Terry Woodall, BSN, RN
