Wellbeing & Flourishing Forever
A Mental Health in Schools Pilot Project - December 2024
Checking In on Mental Fitness and Wellbeing Skill-Building
The Wellbeing and Flourishing Forever Pilot Project had the opportunity to present at the 2024 Alberta Research Network Symposium on November 21, 2024. The theme of the online symposium, Shaping Education in an Era of Complexity, Choice, and Change brought together researchers from across Alberta to share their findings with other thought leaders. We were pleased to share highlights of our pilot project in a one-hour presentation, highlighting Choice and Change through Processes and Practices.
Helping your Child/Teen to Stay Regulated During the Holiday Season
The holiday is soon upon us and even though we enjoy spending time with friends and family, it can cause our children/teens (and even us as adults!) to feel some stress and anxiety with changes in our daily routines, the food we eat, the places we visit and so on. Occupational therapist, Bethany Liscovitz, provides tips to help our children/teens to stay calm and regulated during holidays throughout the year.
5 Tips to Help our Children/Teens to Stay Regulated
1. Give a 'bear hug' - deep pressure is calming
2. Deep breathing - "smell the flowers and blow out the candle"
3. Take a break in a quiet space
4. Take a calming car ride - use calming scents, play calming music, have relaxing items available
5. Be prepared for changes ahead of time
- keep routines/schedules as consistent as possible
- bring familiar/comforting food or snacks when visiting others or traveling
