#UMNMCH student Nichole Castillo; she/her/hers (MPH 2022) wrote this reflection on how her coursework, experience as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and deployment with MDH have contributed to her career in MCH.

Kathleen May is the author of this month's blog post on Competency 11: Working with Communities. She is the Program Coordinator for the Institute for Public Health Practice at the University of Iowa (UI) College of Public Health. She earned her BS in Public Health and MPH in Community and Behavioral Health, both from UI, and received training at UI’s Maternal and Child Professionals to Address Growing Disparities in the Rural Midwest Catalyst Program. Kathleen reflects on her experience with the Title V MCH Internship program and how she obtained skills working with communities. “Understandably, it is impossible to be aware of everything happening in a system, but this is where system mapping can be useful. Working together to address this issue will lead to greater effectiveness and efficiency due to pooled resources, diverse voices and backgrounds, and shared passion.”

Each month, we highlight MCH Leadership competencies for our students to learn more about. Communication is the verbal, nonverbal, and written sharing of information which involves both the message and delivery method.

This one-day event focuses on reproductive justice and person-centered care featuring two plenary presentations, a panel discussion, and a poster session on women’s health research. It draws interdisciplinary women’s health researchers, health care providers, students, and community public health professionals for a day of learning, networking, and research dissemination.

Awards recognizing excellence in scholarship are selected and given to one research team per category based on the status of the primary presenter. The categories are 1) Faculty member, 2) Staff/Community Member, and 3) Student/Trainee.

The aims of the Center include providing continuing professional education in maternal and child health (MCH) and support for students in online and in-person MCH graduate programs at the University of Minnesota.
