Happy New Year Miles Mustangs!
January brings colder weather, a fresh start to the year, and of course, second semester. For us at Miles, we look forward to all that January brings. To start, on January 15th our Annual Scholastic Book Fair will begin. The Book Fair will be open from Wednesday (1/15) to Wednesday (1/22) in the library. We encourage all families to create an eWallet at the link below and to make online purchases. Please coordinate with your child's teacher to send money to shop in the store during the school day. It would be lovely to see you here at Miles on the last day of the Book Fair for an evening shopping experience. Join us for Curriculum Night on Wednesday, January 22 at 5-6:30 pm where you'll get to visit the Book Fair and all the classrooms to see the wonderful things happening this quarter.
January is also a time to learn and grow from the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King spent his life advocating for rights of marginalized people, especially Black people. We observe Dr. King with a day off from school on Monday, January 20th. But what is really important is that we pause here at Miles not just to remember him, but to commit to carrying on his message of forgiveness, and equality, and kindness.
Finally, as the staff here at Miles prepares for a successful second half of the school year, we also embrace opportunities to grow our own learning. Please be aware that Miles, as well as the entire school district, will be closed on Wednesday, January 29th for a full day of professional development. We understand the inconvenience this causes you so am hopeful that knowing the date now will allow for you to prepare.
We look forward to the next several months of the 24-25 school year. Please register for next school year to remain part of the Miles family. We have preschool spaces as well so share with your friends to register for our preschool here at Miles.
With Much Appreciation,
Principal Andrea Steele

Garden News
We had a diverse turnout at our November garden work day of parents, kids, and representatives from U of A, SMS Construction, and from TUSD Food Services. Thank you for cheerfully making our new compost bins, designing a decorative mustang, making progress on mosaic signs, and more!
Our next work day will be Saturday, February 1st.
In gardening class, we’ve enjoyed the cool weather while harvesting, planting, eating, drawing, and painting!

I hope you all had a much earned fun and relaxing Winter Break. This month's focus for Character Strong is Honesty. One way to think about Honesty is "being truthful in what you say and do." Practicing honesty helps strengthen relationships and reduce anxiety and stress. Throughout the school year, students will be developing skills like emotion regulation, positive self-talk, and stress-management.
Ask your child, "How are you feeling today?" Practice honesty when responding and listen carefully as they share. Work together to help regulate or manage emotions to be more confident, calm, or focused.
Here are some emotion Check-In questions you can ask your child:
Tell me more about that feeling.
Why do you think you are feeling that emotion?
What do you need right now?
You can also do some fun role-playing to demonstrate the power of honesty. Create some scenarios and support your child in how to communicate honestly and how to set clear and consistent boundaries. This will encourage engagement and empower students to be transparent in expressing their thoughts and feelings without avoiding them.
