Superintendent's Update - Celebrating a Successful School Year and Looking Ahead
D60 Community,
The end of the 2023-24 school year is almost here! It's a time to celebrate and look back at the work and growth of the past year and a chance to think about what we want for the future.
As I look back at the 2023-24 school year, I see a lot to be proud of. Working towards the goals and outcomes that were outlined in the D60 Strategic Plan has given a renewed energy and sense of purpose to our work. We have a strong foundation to build from in D60, and the strong partnership between our schools and the parent community, coupled with the rich diversity of cultures and perspectives in our district, will continue to chart a path towards excellence.
While we recognize the many accomplishments of our students and staff this year, we are also looking to the future. Our administrative team and teacher leaders will spend time this summer analyzing our performance over the 2023-24 school year, with an eye towards improvement. There was a tremendous amount of time and energy related to our action steps this year, and each presents an opportunity to learn and grow so that we can best meet the needs of our students.
I am grateful for the leadership of our Board of Education and administrative leadership team, for our talented teaching and support staff, and to the parents and community members who engage with us to give our students the best educational experience possible. To our eighth-grade families, it is been an honor and a privilege to be part of your child's educational journey and we hope you keep in touch. To the rest of the D60 community, I hope you have a wonderful summer and we will see you back for the 2024-25 school year!
Yours in partnership,
Dr. Sean Nugent
The Retiring Class of 2024
This year, Maercker D60 is celebrating two teachers who are retiring from our district. These two staff members have a combined 28 years of service of our schools and we are so grateful for their years of dedication to educating and serving our students.
First up is Maercker Fourth Grade Math and Science Teacher Lynn Gorey! She has worked at Maercker for 15 years and has run clubs including Ecology Club, Coding Club and STEM Club as well as helping to run and judge the Science Fair each year. When asked her favorite memories of her time in D60, she said:
“I love the relationships I have made with my students and their families and many friendships I have made with my coworkers. One of my proudest moments is when I won a Distinguished Golden Apple Award. It was an intense process with the Golden Apple committee watching me teach all day, interviewing the administration, my coworkers, my students and parents, but it was an honor.”
Next up is Terri Williams, who has been a part of the D60 team for 13 years and is currently a second grade teacher at Holmes. She started in D60 as a substitute for Christine Hallin in 7th grade resource at Westview, then long term substitute for Andrea Quigley in third grade at Maercker, then long term substitute for Karen Dahl in second grade, then long term substitute for Jamie Free in Kindergarten, then first grade at Holmes and now second grade at Holmes.
She has many fond memories of her time in the district, including taping Principal Sepich to the wall with duct tape for a fundraiser.
“I really thought he was never going to get his circulation back again,” said Terri. “I have made many great memories at Holmes and will always have them with me, but the most significant memories will be the colleagues that I learned and grew with as an educator and every moment a student made progress or started to understand something. Those light bulb moments are my favorite part of teaching.”
Thank you and congratulations to our retirees!
Students Share Advice About Starting at Next D60 School
Moving on to the next school is a big adventure for our students. Starting kindergarten at Holmes, moving up to Maercker for third grade, or officially beginning middle school at Westview Hills is a time full of change, but also opportunity! We asked current students who are wrapping up the year as in kindergarten, third grade, and sixth grade to share what they like and any advice they have for new students as we look ahead to the 2024-25 school year!
Westview Hills 8th Grade Awards
Each year, Westview Hills Middle School asks staff to nominate students for a variety of awards to end the school year. Each award has different requirements and characteristics for staff to consider during nominations.
Summer EBT Update
Summer EBT is a federally funded program that provides grocery-buying benefits to low-income families with school-aged children when schools are closed for the summer. The Summer EBT benefit is $120 per eligible student for Summer 2024.
