Stay in Tip Top Shape During the Summer
To help avoid this, we have put together a reading and math summer challenge. The math challenge is similar to what we did in March and April and the students really enjoyed it. Summer reading is just that. READING! So, have your child pick up books and read throughout the break. Children will track their reading path over summer break and log how much they read. We are asking students to write 2-3 quick book reviews that we will use when we return in September. Hard copies of the work will be coming home but you can view them by clicking on the documents directly below this message.
Chromebooks AND Chargers
Chromebooks AND chargers MUST be handed in before students leave for summer. Teachers have started to collect them already. Thank you to those who returned your devices AND chargers, but for those who haven't yet please have your child return it ASAP. All the chromebooks will need to be updated and cleaned up by the tech dept over summer. Some grade levels will be receiving brand new chromebooks next year. Report cards will not be sent home until the device is returned. If we don't receive the device and charger before school lets out, you will have to coordinate with the office to return the chromebook and get the report card. Thank you for your attention to this request.
Message for 4th grade families
Chromebooks: As a request from CMS, 4th grade students will be keeping their chromebooks and chargers for the summer. The 4th grade students will need their school device for summer work. So, that means 4th grade students will take their devices home for the summer and will turn them in when CMS distributes new devices to the 5th graders. CMS will be in touch at the end of the summer for the swap. Thank you.
CMS Summer Reading: Chariho Middle School requires your child to read 2 books over the summer. Students are encouraged to read any book that matches their interests and challenges them! Students must complete a book project for each book to receive credit for summer reading. Students should bring projects in on the first day of school. Project options and criteria can be found on the CMS library summer reading page: https://guides.rilinkschools.org/charihomiddleschool/summerreading

CMS Summer Math: Continuing to practice and maintain math skills is an essential part of being prepared for the next school year. This summer, every CMS student (entering grades 5-8) will be required to complete six (6) lessons on their My Path in iReady. Please see this link for complete information.
4th Grade Moving Up Ceremony
Today we celebrated our current 4th graders in a moving up ceremony. Thank you Laura Clarke for creating the 21-22 slideshow for the children. It was amazing. There is another video that Mrs. Moore created for the 4th graders. Mrs. Moore is a TA who oversees the 4th graders at lunch and recess. This video is definitely worth the watch. Enjoy!

Class Placements
Each spring, there is considerable discussion about placing children for the next school year. The staff and I spend countless hours developing well-balanced classes in which all children have an opportunity to learn and develop their academic and social skills. It is my hope that offering a review of our procedures would reassure you that your child’s placement for next year is in good hands.
There's a clear set of guidelines followed when classes are developed. Heterogeneous groups are formed with the following in mind: even balance of boys and girls, full range of aptitudes, even proportion of abilities and learning styles, an equal number of students per class, individual student needs, physical needs, school behavior, and peer relationships. In some circumstances, we need to do what is best for an entire grade level. Once these factors are considered, the classes are formed. Regardless, there are a ton of conversations that take place to create class lists. At this time, attempts are made to match student and teacher personality and approach. These decisions are based upon observations made by teaching staff during the course of the school year. Current teachers also discuss placements with the previous year’s teachers as well as myself. Specialist teachers and other service providers also give input.
The entire placement process started after April vacation involving some very detailed conversations and in-depth consideration. This process has been well underway and is in it's final phase. We trust that you understand there is a lot of consideration in forming well balanced classes. Due to the difficulty of placing children, parent requests are not accepted and the final decision on class placements resides with the school. Thank you for your trust and continued support.
Updated COVID Guidance
Individuals who test positive for COVID must quarantine for 5 days. Students can continue to return to school on days 6-10 as long as symptoms have improved and they wear a well-fitted mask at all times including on the bus. Directly below is updated guidance from RIDOH or you can click HERE.
Covid Protocols- Household Contacts
Asymptomatic household contacts regardless of vaccination status can return to school as long as they agree to test on the day of return and up through day 5 (if over a weekend for day 5, the student will test upon return).
It is important to understand that if the student has any single symptom they will be sent home and will be unable to return to school unless there is consent to have an antigen test completed at school when symptom-free or the family completes two home tests that are 48 hours apart from symptom onset. If any of these conditions are not met the student will follow the current RIDOH guidelines for quarantining and returning to school, which states, “Household members who are not vaccinated and who do not consent to have antigen testing completed must quarantine while the infected household individual is in isolation, then start their 5-day quarantine.”
Mask wearing will be recommended for household contacts for 10 days from the date of exposure.

Important Reminders
Absences - If your child is going to be absent, please call the school office at 401-539-2321. If your child happens to test positive for COVID, PLEASE be sure to email Nurse Tara, Ms. Donna, and Mr. G with that information.
- Nurse Tara: Tara.McAloon@chariho.k12.ri.us
- Ms. Donna: Donna.Sunderland@chariho.k12.ri.us
- Mr. G, Principal: giuseppe.gencarelli@chariho.k12.ri.us
Peanut & Tree Nut Free School - We continue to be a nut free school which means no peanut butter and no tree nuts including Nutella.
TOYS - Please make sure that your children do not take any toys from home to school. We continue to see an uptick in this and it is causing problems at school.
Identification - PLEASE be sure parents who are picking up children early from school have proper identification with them when they come to the front door. Ms. Donna is not always the one in the office and we must verify who is picking up the children. Thank you for your undivided attention to this request.
Parking at HVES - The parking spots that are numbered in the school lot are for staff ONLY. We are having issues with parents dropping off children in the morning and taking up a staff parking spot which is causing staff members to be late which is becoming problematic. Also, some staff end up getting blocked since we have double parking at the end of the day. If parents need to come to the building, PLEASE either park in front of the school or at Langworthy Field and walk up the stairs to the main front door.
