April 14 - 18, 2025
Dear Open High Family,
Last week was another busy week at the Open Hive!
- Our inaugural Girls Flag Football team, The Queen Bees, won their first game against Richmond Community, 19 to 12! We encourage everyone to come out to the next away game against Franklin Military Academy on Wednesday.
- Not only did REAL Richmond students visit the Moton Museum to learn about the student-led strike that challenged segregated "separate but equal" schools, they also explored downtown Richmond with a focus on navigation and pedestrian safety. Read more about their experience HERE.
- Bea and Laila's Culture Day Senior Project was such fun! Thanks to everyone who participated and special thanks to the Latino Student Union, the Black Student Union, and Jim Smith for the great photos. Check them out HERE.
- Finnaly, our AP Environmental Science students visited University of Richmond's Eco-Corridor with Broad Water Innovations to investigate the stream restoration project, native flora and fauna, and careers in environmental conservation.
We're a small school, with a small staff, but this exceptional team of educators works hard every single day -- inside and outside the classroom -- to make school meaningful. But make no mistake, IT TAKES A VILLAGE to make this work. Our students, families, and community members are partners in all we do, and we are grateful!
Parent/Caregiver Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, 4:30-6:30 pm. This is a "drop by" event and no appointment is needed. Teachers are also available by appointment or by email.
Your chance to support the OHS Rocket Club's purchase of a 3D Printer ends on May 8! Help support these future engineers by visiting Donors Choose today. Thanks to those who have already donated!
This week, we plan to conduct our monthly fire drill along with our final Lockdown Drill, in accordance with Virginia law. The purpose of the drill is to practice our safety lockdown drill protocols in the event there is any potential danger outside or inside our building. During the drill, no one will be allowed to enter or leave the building.

Summer Opportunity with the VA Department of ForestryThe Camp Woods & Wildlife Summer Program is open to students ages 13 to 16, show an interest in natural resources, and are in good academic standing. The program is ideal for students who wish to explore forestry and wildlife related careers, participate in forestry and ecology clubs, and want to experience hands-on learning while gaining real-world skills in natural resources conservation. The application deadline is April 25: https://dof.virginia.gov/education-and-recreation/youth-education/camp-woods-wildlife/
The Institute for Contemporary Art is sponsoring the Level Up Academy--a two week podcast/audio storytelling program for students 17 and up. A $700 stipend is provided. There is also an option to apply for college credit to earn $1500. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Saskia if you have any questions. The Atlas Artist Residency is an intensive eight-week mentorship program for 10 high school artists (grades 9-11) from Richmond. This summer-long experience provides young creativesโprioritizing those from Richmond Public Schools and BIPOC communitiesโwith the resources, guidance, and professional mentorship to elevate their artistic practice. Resident youth artists receive studio space, a $1,350 stipend, and art materials. Throughout the program, they engage in hands-on workshops, portfolio-building activities, and community-focused art making, while learning from established local and international artists. Field trips, including museum visits and nature excursions, offer inspiration, experience creating in new environments, and a deeper connection to their craft and the world. Apply today at
https://www.art180.org/student-artist-residency Applications due by April 15! Ask Divine and Sierra K about their experience!
The James River Leadership Expedition is a tremendous opportunity for students interested in the environment! Travel down the James River by canoe, camp out under the stars, learn about the river ecosystem, and develop a capstone project to help the public become more aware of this tremendous resource in our backyard. Register for an info session HERE. We had a record number of Open students participate last summer--Sophie B, Liz, Max, and Sunny--so ask them about their experience!

Joining does not obligate you to anything although we are always looking for more help! Extra donations are also very much appreciated. Consider linking your Kroger Shopper's Card to the Open High PTSA.
