Happy New Year, BGHS!

Welcome back from what I hope was a restful Winter Break! I've heard frequently that many families were sick over the holidays- that's the worst and I'm wishing all affected a quick recovery. Please reach out to our attendance office if your student is still sick to excuse the absences.

We are hosting a Levy Information Night for Parents on January 21st from 6-7pm in our Lair (cafeteria). Childcare will be provided- we hope that you can join us. BGPS Leadership will share more about the levy, costs, and why the funds are so critically needed.

Secondly, in an effort to continue to ensure our systems are reasonable and sustainable, we have made a shift to our Student Support Teams (administrator, counselor, and security officer that wrap around each family). The changes only affect the principal or assistant principal serving your family and you can see the teams below. We encourage you to reach out to your team with any needs, life changes, or celebrations you would like to share!

Our semester is quickly nearing, and I'd like to reiterate the importance of every student passing every class in order to be on track for graduation. If we can help in anyway, please reach out. We are with you.

Elizabeth will go on to represent BGHS at the regional finals in Olympia in March.

The varsity teams of AFJROTC competed in the first drill meet of the season on 14 December at Rogers High School in Puyallup WA. Over 300 cadets from 8 schools in the region assembled to compete in drill, color guard, marksmanship, fitness, and academics, and Battle Ground had a strong showing at the event.

The marksmanship teams took first place in Precision and second place in Sporter class; Redmond VanDyne was 2d place as an individual sporter while Brianna Hall was 4th place and Jack McAleer was 5th in the precision class. The academic team, led by Noah Colagross took 2nd place and on the fitness team, Jeremiah Norwood earned 2d place in the Ironman category. The color guard captain, Nick Mayeda, was 2d in his competition and Micheal Gunderson earned 1st place and Mckenzie Hayford was 2d place for drill down tap out.

AFJROTC is a CTE program that includes valuable academic courses in addition to varsity sports and other competitive teams for cadets to participate in outside of school.

Do you love the outdoors? Do you exhibit Unity Toughness and Class? Would you like the opportunity to grow as a leader and mentor? Are you ready to lead 6th-grade students at a week-long Outdoor School?

We are looking for 20 outstanding High School students to serve as Outdoor School Counselors at Daybreak’s 3-day 2-night Outdoor School at Camp Dudley March 12-14, 2025.

Cascadia Tech Academy Website

CTA Tour

Battle Ground High School students will tour Cascadia Tech Academy on January 14, 2025, from 8:00 am - 10:30 am. To attend the tour students must sign up in the College and Career Center by December 20, 2024, and complete the field trip permission documentation.

Application Process

The Cascadia Tech Applications (paper form) will be available in the College and Career Center on January 15, 2025. Completed applications must be received by January 31, 2025. This is a quick turnaround time. Don’t procrastinate. The application process does not guarantee placement into Cascadia Tech Academy.

Hi Seniors, Parents, and Guardians,

It’s time to complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid) processes.

One of the first steps is creating an FSA ID, which is necessary for signing and submitting the FAFSA online. Both students and one parent or guardian will create their own FSA IDs.

This ID is crucial as it serves as your legal signature and provides access to your federal student aid information.

Join us in January to receive assistance in completing the application.

Battle Ground Public School is hosting a virtual presentation via Google Meet to provide information about dual credit for all students and families, eighth through 11th grades, on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 4-5 p.m. Dual credit provides students with the potential to earn high school and college credit at the same time. Information will include Running Start at Clark College, Cascadia Tech Academy (Skills Center), career and technical education dual credit, work-based learning, College in the High School and Advanced Placement classes. Save the date! The tenth annual Battle Ground Public Schools Industry Fair will be held at Battle Ground High School on Thursday, Feb. 20, from 5-7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Come meet with local employers to learn about apprenticeship opportunities and employment in fields such as health care, education, manufacturing, technology, construction and many more. There will also be a resume workshop in the high school’s career center from 3-6 p.m.

Here are 10 quick facts about Proposition 8, the replacement educational programs and operations levy on the Feb. 11 ballot:

1. If approved by voters, the proposed levy would replace the expiring education and operations levy, which ends in December 2025.

2. The replacement education and operations levy would begin January 2026 and continue through December 2029.

3. The levy would provide funding for programs and services that affect students in every BGPS school.

4. The levy would pay for things that the state doesn’t fully fund. These include student safety, busing, special education, curriculum, mental health support, nursing/health services, sports, the arts and more.

5. The costs of supporting students and operating schools are increasing.

6. This levy is separate and different from the capital levy approved in February 2024. The capital levy will cover building repairs; technology updates; and spaces for construction trades, culinary, and health sciences classes.

7. The levy provides 13% of the district’s total budget. Without levy funding, the district would need to make cuts to programs and services. For example, class sizes could increase, bus routes could be consolidated and middle school sports would likely be eliminated.

8. The levy would collect $166.28 million over four years. By law, the district can’t collect more than the amount that voters approve, even if property values increase.

9. The estimated rate is $1.95 per $1,000 of assessed property value. For the owner of a $621,000 property, the proposed levy would cost an estimated $101 per month in the first year.

10. The levy will appear on the ballot on Feb. 11, 2025. Remember to vote! Every registered voter who lives within the district is eligible.

What, exactly, is CASEE? Come learn about the district’s half-day science-based program for high school students. The Center for Agriculture, Science and Environmental Education is holding their annual Science Night open house on Thursday, Jan. 16, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Visit with teachers and current students, view ongoing experiments and tour the 80-acre outdoor learning campus in Brush Prairie (11104 NE 149th St). Students in grades 8-11, along with their parents/guardians, are welcome to attend. Please RSVP in advance. We hope to see you there!

Snow routes for 2024-25 are now posted on the district website. Be sure and take a moment to check out our handy winter weather guide for information on late starts or school closures due to weather-related impacts. Please note, the district is divided into “north” and “south” schools. This year, Battle Ground Virtual Academy is considered a south school.

In case of a school closure or late start, we may begin contacting families as early as 5:30 a.m. We will attempt to contact you at the telephone number and email address that are listed in your Skyward (Family Access) account. We would encourage you to take a minute and log into Skyward to verify your contact information is up to date. You can also reach out to your school office for assistance.

Battle Ground Public Schools is partnering with Chartwells to provide breakfast and lunch at school. Menus are still available via Nutrislice and meal expenses can still be paid through InTouch Receipting, just like last year. Printable menus are also available on the district and school websites.

Artificial intelligence is a growing part of our everyday lives and there are a lot of questions about its use in classrooms. Battle Ground Public Schools uses MagicSchool for teachers and MagicStudent on the student side. MagicStudent does not collect student data and includes important safeguards to provide a safe environment to build AI literacy skills and accessibility tools to develop independence and improve learning. Do you know an amazing staff member? The new Employee Recognition Awards will highlight staff members who reflect the district’s strategic plan goals. Three nominees will be selected each month and recognized at a board meeting. Everyone is welcome to submit a nomination.
