GHS Weekly Newsletter:
Week of September 2, 2024:
After the first week of school, students were giving a survey about the impact of the new cell phone policy at Goshen High School. Here are a few thoughts from students:
During last school year I was on my phone whenever I had any chance of free time, making me procrastinate and have to work on the assignments closer to the due date than I should’ve. This year, I have already done more work during study hall than I did during my study halls last year summed up entirely.
It is obvious that there is a lot more involvement in class.
I am getting my work done and am focused more while at school.
I’m a lot more engaged and paying more attention. My grades are great so far.
More concentration in classes, being more engaged is seen across the board.
Students are better during actual teaching times and people paying better attention during work.
I am able to stay focused. It forces me to work on other school work in different classes even if I do finish early.
My grades are higher, I don’t have as many missing assignments and I’m more focused!!
Less drama and arguing in the building. It makes this school a happier place.
Hallways are easier to navigate with people paying attention.
I checked out a book from the library and I am told that more books have been checked out from the library.
In every class I am in I always see people actually working.
I am reading for the first time ever. I finished a whole book!

Congrats to Junior, Chanell Von Bargen, for having the opportunity to perform at halftime at a recent Cincinnati Bengals pre-season game. Chanell is a member of the Jr. Ben-gals performing with the Ben-gals cheer squad. What an amazing experience!

Wiz Kids: Goshen Methodist Church across the street has a program called Wiz Kids. They are in need of high school students to help tutor elementary students. They will meet every Tuesday 3:00-5:00. See Mrs. Hadley in the guidance office for details or to sign up.
Free Breakfast/Lunch and Fee Waiver: We’re excited to remind you that all Goshen students can receive a free healthy breakfast and lunch at school this year. There’s no need to pay or fill out any forms. This is made possible through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program, which allows schools with high poverty rates to offer free meals to all students. Important: If you want to apply for fee waivers for other school fees, you must fill out the benefits application. You can find the waiver form here: The school fee waiver form may be found here. We know students do their best when they’re well-fed, and we’re happy to help ease some of the financial challenges families face. We’re thrilled to offer this benefit to the entire Goshen community!

Cell Phones: House Bill 250, which was signed into law by Governor DeWine, limits the use of cell phones and other wireless devices in our schools. Goshen Local Schools agrees with the research behind HB250 and with limiting the distractions that cell phone use creates for our students. With that in mind, below are the proposed changes to our cell phone practices and student handbook policies for the 2024-2025 school year, pending Board approval. Students are permitted to have cell phones on campus. Students are not permitted to use phones during class time or to take phones to the restroom. The expectation is for cell phones and wireless earbuds/headphones/AirPods to be put away and silenced in the classroom unless documented in IEP/504 or for documented health concerns. Students may access their devices before school, during lunch, and after school. To ensure compliance with these guidelines, the following consequences will be enforced:
Consequence for violating cellphone guidelines
1st offense (Classroom) - warning provided and parent contacted by teacher
2nd offense (Strike 1 in Office) - phone sent to office, parent contacted, and student can pick up phone from office at the end of the day
3rd offense (Strike 2 in Office) - phone sent to office, device must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and conversation is had about the repercussions if a student earns Strike 3.
4th offense (Strike 3 in Office) - phone sent to office, device must be picked up by the parent/guardian, and the device is not permitted to return to the school building for a designated amount of time up to and including the rest of the school year.
Chronic abuse of cell phone privileges will result in appropriate disciplinary measures up to and including suspension from school.
