April is Autism Awareness Month
Shift from Disability Mindset to a Neuro-diversity Mindset
Because we know that students with ASD range on the IQ scale with similar distribution, we must not look at it as simply a disability. It is a neuro-diversity and so we must access and implement instructional and behavioral practices that we know without a doubt work for students with ASD.
The Bottom Line
Success for Students with ASD depends on
- Stability
- Consistency
- Visuals
- Reinforcement
- Consistent access to communication
- Learner preferred activities

Rogers Park AK Star Testing is Wrapping Up
Each spring, Alaskan students are provided an opportunity to show what they know. When students show what they know, teachers and parents can partner to promote student success. The State of Alaska Department of Education has partnered with NWEA to align and connect the English language arts (ELA) and mathematics tests with the MAP Growth benchmark assessments students take in fall and winter.
This balanced assessment system targets instruction to better support meeting students’ individual learning needs. In addition, students will take only one assessment per content area (ELA and math) and be provided two scores as follows:
Summative assessment result at grade-level
MAP Growth interim benchmark result, including growth from fall to spring
AK STAR, the Alaska System of Academic Readiness, is comprised of English language arts and mathematics and is administered to students in grades 3-9. The Alaska Science Assessment is administered to students in grades 5, 8 and 10. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at grade level.
Parents can locate resources for AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment, including directions for Student Readiness (Practice Tests and Tutorials), student testing times and general assessment information on the ASD website at https://www.asdk12.org/akstar.
Parents can also help by ensuring their children are well rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, and are at school on time for the days of testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.
The ASD AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment testing window allows for school assessment scheduling flexibility.
As part of The Alaska Reads Act, the State of Alaska requires that districts administer an early literacy screening tool three times a year to students in grades K-3 to identify potential reading difficulties in order to improve reading outcomes for students. Families can read more about this comprehensive K-3 reading policy at The Alaska Reads Act website: education.alaska.gov/akreads
mClass with DIBELS 8th Edition Assessments is the State of Alaska Department of Education’s and ASD’s Early Literacy benchmark screening and progress monitoring tool for students in grades K-3 in reading. mClass utilizes curriculum-based measures and is used by schools as part of the ASD Comprehensive Assessment System to support informed instructional decisions.
The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development explains the decision to adopt mClass as the statewide literacy screener here:
https://education.alaska.gov/Alaska-Reading-Resources/Statewide-Early-Literacy-Screener
mClass screening assessments will only be administered in-person during the benchmark window listed below:

Rogers Park Talent Show - May 2nd
We’re going to end the year with a BANG! Students have an opportunity to audition to be a part of this year’s Talent Show. In order to keep the Talent Show to an hour, not all students who audition will be in this year’s show. Please be prepared for this possibility.
· Talent Show Date: Friday, May 2nd at 12:45pm (school assembly) & 6:30pm in the Gym. All performers must stay until the end of the show for the final bow.
· Audition Dates: Tuesday, April 15th, OR Thursday, April 17th, from 2:30pm-4:00pm in the Music Room
· Mandatory Dress Rehearsal: Thursday, May 1st from 2:30pm-4:30pm in the Gym. Performers must attend the Dress Rehearsal and must stay for the entire time. Performers who leave early or fail to attend the Dress Rehearsal will be removed from the final performance.
All acts need to be PERFORMANCE READY at the audition time. A performance ready act includes the following characteristics and has the following requirements:
· Acts may not exceed two (2) minutes. Shorter acts are appreciated to allow more students to participate.
· The act must be performed from beginning to end without stopping or restarting.
· All acts should be entertaining and fun to watch!
· All music, dancing, and acts must be elementary appropriate.
· Absolutely NO lip-syncing. An accompanist or a karaoke type CD must accompany all singers unless sung a cappella.
· To add variety to the show, there will be a limited number of the same type of acts.
· Students may participate in one (1) solo performance and one (1) group performance with a maximum of two acts.
· Dancing, Singing, Instrumental/Piano Performance, Magic Tricks, Poetry Readings, Karate Demonstrations, Juggling, Comedy Routines, Hula Hooping, etc., are appreciated to make our Talent Show interesting and fun!
· The decision of the judges is final and must be respected.
Good luck and practice hard! Auditions are right around the corner.

PTA Updates
Hello PTA Families!
Thanks to those who participated in our budget meeting and planning process last week, we appreciate all members, including families and staff, who provided input on the needs at our school. We will be voting on the proposed budget at our upcoming membership meeting this Thursday, April 17th, hosted in the school library and on Zoom at 6pm. Please join us! Members of our board have also been working to update our bylaws, required every 5 years for our PTA. A proposed bylaws update was emailed to members last week. Please anticipate voting on these at our May meeting or via an email form we will send to members.
Who's screaming for ice-cream?!? We are!! Thanks to a very generous partnership with the fabulous Wild Scoops, your family can enjoy delicious ice cream and support the PTA and Rogers Park. On Wednesday, April 16th, from 12-10 pm Wild Scoops will donate 20% of total sales to our PTA - just be sure to mention that you are from Rogers Park!

PTA needs YOU! We will have 3 open officer positions on our board next year:
President
Treasurer
VP, Communications
If you are interested in any of these roles, please let us know via email (rogers.park.pta@gmail.com) and we can share more about the duties involved. Mentorship will be available this spring and next fall. These board positions are for a one year term, with the potential to renew for a second for 2 consecutive years according to our bylaws. We hope to vote on new board positions at our April 17th meeting in order to allow time for transition. If a board position is not something that you can fit into your schedule, we do have many open committee positions and small volunteering commitments that can be done outside the school or work day. We are looking for PTA members to chair a family event later this month (details to come), and we will need volunteers and donors as we plan for Staff Appreciation Week May 5th-9th.

Camp Fire Fall Opportunities
Hello Camp Fire Families,
On March 19, 2025 at 6:00 am, registration for the 2025-2026 school year opened for all Camp Fire sites. This includes after school programs, half days, full days, as well as winter and spring break. Camp Fire’s monthly after school fees do not include half or full day programming. All half day, full day, and breaks require a separate registration.
Camp Fire plans to operate full day, winter and spring break programs at Alpenglow and Rogers Park Elementary Schools. These sites are subject to change based on availability from the Anchorage School District. Camp Fire will notify families if any changes in location occur. Camp Fire charges a $35 deposit for each option that you enroll in. This deposit will apply to the full cost of that option. The after school program as a whole is just one $35 deposit and then any additional options will have their own $35 deposit.
When you are making your selections for the after school program, you will see each month listed separately. You must select all 10 months to complete your registration. Several months are pro-rated due to a reduction in program days. Camp Fire is excited to announce that after school programs at Chugach Optional and Gladys Wood Elementary schools will re-open for the 2025-2026 school year. Registration for these programs also opened on March 19 with all other sites.
Rates for the upcoming school year are below. Aquarian and Chugach Optional have a different schedule than other ASD schools so their rates are listed separately. All other schools will have the same after school monthly rate. After School Monthly- $590 Aquarian After School Monthly- $520 Chugach Optional After School Monthly-$535 Camp Fire will continue to offer scholarships as funds allow.
