MS 50 Updates: Week of January 27, 2025

Congrats to the MS 50 Debate team for their victorious showing, coming in first place in all of NYC at the winter NYC Reads Debate! We are so proud of the hard work they all put in preparing for this debate and growing in their skills. Special shoutout to our 17 undefeated teams and top speakers! Check the website later this week for photos from the day.

Classroom Spotlight: Math

6th Grade- Ratios

In this unit, students learn to understand and use the terms “ratio,” “rate,” “equivalent ratios,” “per,” “at this rate,” “constant speed,” and “constant rate,” and to recognize when two ratios are or are not equivalent. They represent ratios as expressions, and represent equivalent ratios with double number line diagrams, tape diagrams, and tables. They use these terms and representations in reasoning about situations involving color mixtures, recipes, unit pricing, and constant speed.

7th Grade- Rational Number Arithmetic

In this unit, students explore signed numbers in real-world contexts such as temperature, elevation, and speed. They learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide signed numbers, gaining fluency in representing these operations through tables, number lines, and equations. Students will interpret and calculate changes in quantities like temperature or distance, and plot coordinates on a graph to better understand relationships between values. They also study proportional relationships, such as constant speed, using multiplication and division equations. By the end of the unit, students will be more confident in working with signed numbers in various contexts.

Grade 8- Exponential Functions

In previous grades, students studied whole-number exponents. In this unit, they extend the definition of exponents to include all integers, and in the process codify the properties of exponents. They apply these concepts to the base-ten system, and learn about orders of magnitude and scientific notation in order to represent and compute with very large and very small quantities.

College Awareness Day

This Friday is College Awareness Day! Wear gear from your favorite college to show off your school spirit!
