Message From Principal Whitney
Dear DESA Eagle Families,
I hope this message finds you well as we approach a busy and exciting time at DESA! Thank you for trusting us with your child’s education and for being such an essential part of the DESA community. Together, we’re creating a place where our students can grow, learn, and reach their full potential.
Community Listening Session
We are pleased to invite you to a Community Listening Session on Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00pm at Dr. L.G. Pinkston High School (2815 Bickers St.). This session is a valuable opportunity for parents and guardians to connect with our district leadership, ask questions, and share insights that will help shape the future of Dallas ISD. District representatives are eager to hear from our school community, so I encourage everyone who can to attend. This is an excellent platform to voice your thoughts, concerns, and hopes for our school and our students.
Mastery Check Assessment Scores
We have recently completed our first district mastery check assessments in reading and math, providing valuable insights into each student’s academic progress. These scores help us tailor instruction to meet each student’s needs, supporting both areas for growth and highlighting strengths. Letters detailing scores and goals will be sent home on Thursday, October 31st. If you have any questions about your child’s scores or would like to discuss their progress, please reach out to their teacher or schedule a meeting. We’re here to work together to support their academic journey.
High School Showcase
Finally, we’re thrilled to announce our upcoming High School Showcase for 8th graders on Tuesday, October 29th from 5:00pm – 6:30pm. This event is an excellent opportunity for students and families to explore the diverse programs and pathways available at Dallas ISD schools as they prepare for the next steps in their educational journey. Representatives from different schools and programs will be available to answer questions. We encourage all families of 8th grade students to attend this informative and inspiring event!
Costume Events
With Halloween coming up, we’re looking forward to a fun day for students to express their creativity. Students are welcome to wear costumes on Thursday, October 31st, and we ask that costumes remain school-appropriate—no masks, props, or costumes that may disrupt learning or feel unsafe. Please see costume guidelines for detailed criteria. Let’s make it a day filled with creativity and joy while keeping our learning environment positive for everyone!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. It’s a joy to work together as we guide our students through such an exciting time of growth and learning. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to reach out.
Warm regards,
Principal Whitney

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
As we enter our new school year, we want to ensure all students are present receiving instruction daily. According to Texas State law (Texas Education Agency, 2024), each student must be in attendance 90 percent of the days the class is offered. The implementation of the Attendance for Credit Initiative is to ensure that all students are in attendance 90 percent of the time a class is offered to certify successful accrual of credit or final grade. At times, students will be eligible at the end of the term as dates continue accruing until the end of the six weeks or semester. Some students have received truancy notices or a notice regarding attendance for credit. Truancy and attendance for credit are two completely different things, students receive a truancy notice once they have accumulated three unexcused absences, attendance for credit is for students that have excessive absences in any class. Truancy can be avoided by ensuring that excuse notes are provided for absences, please remember to send in excuse notes when students are absent, students can bring them to the office or notes can be emailed to Ms. Washington at mwashington@dallasisd.org
