School Board Appreciation Month
Celebrating Our School Board Members
January is School Board Appreciation Month, and we’re thrilled to recognize the dedication and commitment of our Sedro-Woolley School District Board of Directors. These individuals volunteer their time and energy to ensure our schools remain a cornerstone of our community, providing a high-quality education for every student.
Lindy Mullen Doyle – Director District 2 (Lyman Elementary)
Lindy grew up in Lyman, attended Sedro-Woolley schools, and now raises her family in the same community she cherishes. With two children currently in the District and another on the way, Lindy is passionate about representing her community, advocating for its needs, and ensuring learning opportunities for all students.
Danielle Baird Russell – Director District 3 (Clear Lake & Big Lake Elementary Schools)
Danielle’s deep belief in community and the power of education stems from her experiences as a Sedro-Woolley High School graduate. Her passion for service was inspired by a class she took during high school, and today she brings that same dedication to her role on the board, representing the values of connection and opportunity for students and families.
Eric A. Johnson – Director District 4 (Mary Purcell & Evergreen Elementary Schools)
A fourth-generation Sedro-Woolley resident, Eric’s journey led him to serve on the School Board in 2017. His work is guided by a steadfast commitment to ensuring that every decision centers around student success. Eric believes that public education is a great equalizer, offering all students a path to a brighter future.
Brent Schiefelbein – Director District 1 (Samish Elementary School)
Brent, a lifelong resident of Sedro-Woolley and proud graduate of the District, is deeply committed to serving his community. With two children currently attending Samish Elementary, Brent values the opportunity to help shape a thriving school environment where students can grow and excel.
Please join us in thanking our board members for their leadership, passion, and dedication to the success of our students, schools, and community.
Sports Medicine Team: Hands-On Learning
For some students, the excitement of being close to the action is what draws them to sports medicine.
Senior Andreanna “Anna” Evans is one such student. She loves working at wrestling duals, describing the fast-paced environment as thrilling.
Evans is part of Sedro-Woolley High School’s Sports Medicine Team, joining fellow seniors Savannah Evans and Tianna Benoit; juniors Maricarmen Torres, Kera Eerkes, Samantha Medina Mondragon, and Yaretzi Torres; and sophomore Tyson Slater.
To join the team, students must first complete Intro to Health Science and Sports Medicine 1. Many also take Sports Medicine 2 to further enhance their skills. The classes are especially popular with student-athletes, who want to learn how to prevent and care for injuries. Once prerequisites are met, students register for the Sports Medicine Team via Final Forms, just like other sports programs. Team members must also have a sports physical and maintain the required GPA.
Anna, who plays soccer and tennis for the Cubs, said her favorite part of sports medicine is being on the sidelines for various sports and learning more about them.
For Savannah Evans, the best part is the hands-on experience.
“It really creates a foundation for my life and eventual career in the medical field,” she said. Football is her favorite sport to cover because the team treated her like family.
Tianna Benoit joined the program after a knee injury ended her soccer and basketball aspirations.
“I still get to be close to all the sports,” she said.
Kera Eerkes agreed, noting the program provides hands-on experience and a chance to form connections.
“You get to meet and get to know a lot of people—the athletes and other sports medicine students,” she said. “You spend a lot of time together.”
Samantha Medina Mondragon echoed the sentiment.
“The best part is meeting new people, like the players on the team,” she said.
Many students named football as their favorite sport to cover. Tianna enjoyed the welcoming environment, Kera appreciated the team’s inclusivity and positivity, and Samantha liked getting to know the players.
For sophomore Tyson Slater, the camaraderie stands out.
“For me, it’s the bond you create with the team. You’re building a family outside of your own and having fun,” he said.
Basketball has been his favorite sport so far.
“I got to meet new athletes and reconnect with some I already knew from football,” he said. “They’re chill.”
Girls Basketball Coach Kenneth Crawford praised the Sports Medicine Team’s contributions.
“There is no doubt that our student trainers are a very important part of our success,” Crawford said. “They demonstrate a growing knowledge of athletic care, are consistent and diligent in what they do. You can tell they take pride in what they do, and that is a result of the excellent mentorship they get from Mel, our athletic trainer. Their efforts are very much appreciated!”
Whether they’re treating injuries, watching dramatic plays, or building connections, Sedro-Woolley High School’s Sports Medicine Team is learning valuable skills and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
"Young Sherlock" shines with wit and charm
Sedro-Woolley High School's drama production of Young Sherlock was a delightful blend of intrigue, humor, and energy that captivated audiences this week from the opening scene to the final bow. The play offered a fresh take on the first crime solved by the legendary detective, Sherlock Holmes.
The cast delivered stellar performances, drawing frequent laughter and applause from the audience, with standout performances from the villains, whose antics were both menacing and comedic.
The set design was nothing short of impressive, transforming the stage into a Victorian-era London boarding school. Clever use of lighting enhanced the mood of suspense, while the costumes transported viewers to Sherlock's world.
Students’ poise under pressure was a testament to their hard work. This production not only entertained but also celebrated the potential of young performers. Bravo to the cast, crew, and advisors for a memorable evening of theater!
Dr. Bob and Becky Gates Honored for Contributions
Dr. Bob Gates and his wife, Becky, were recognized Monday night for their enduring support of the Sedro-Woolley School District during the school board meeting.
Since 1994, the couple has contributed $1.5 million to enhance educational opportunities across the district. Their generosity is primarily channeled through Gates Grants, which teachers can request annually to fund classroom projects and initiatives.
Several students shared heartfelt stories about the impact of the Gates' contributions. Among the highlights was the couple sending sixth graders to a Seattle Mariners game last school year.
Big Lake Elementary Recognized for Exceptional Growth
Big Lake Elementary School has been honored for its outstanding efforts in improving student learning, earning recognition through the Washington School Recognition Program for the 2022-23 school year. The staff were honored to receive a banner to celebrate this achievement, reflecting the collective efforts of its educators, students, and the community. This recognition highlights the importance of tailored support and innovative practices that drive meaningful progress in education.
The Washington School Recognition Program acknowledges K–12 public schools across the state for closing opportunity gaps and promoting academic achievement. Schools like Big Lake Elementary are evaluated through the Washington School Improvement Framework (WSIF), which uses multiple data measures to identify areas of success and opportunities for growth. Recognized schools are those demonstrating significant advancements for specific student groups or overall performance.
Encouraging Literacy with a New Spin
Bikes for Books Program at Big Lake Elementary
Big Lake Elementary School students have a new incentive to dive into their books: the chance to win a brand-new bicycle! These shiny wheels, one for a boy and one for a girl, were donated by the Skagit Valley Masonic Lodge #36 as part of the statewide Bikes for Books program sponsored by the State Masonic Grand Lodge.
The program aims to inspire a love for reading by rewarding students for reaching literacy milestones. At Big Lake Elementary, every student is entered into a drawing for the bicycles, with additional entries awarded to those who meet their reading goals throughout the year. This year, the drawing will take place during the all-school assembly on the last day of school, where members of the Masonic Lodge will be present to personally award the bicycles to the lucky winners.
The Bikes for Books program isn’t limited to Big Lake Elementary. The Skagit Valley Masonic Lodge #36 donated 26 bicycles in total: 14 to Sedro-Woolley School District's seven elementary schools, 10 to Stanwood, and 2 to La Conner. Each school tailors the program to meet the needs of their students, with teachers setting benchmarks for participation and determining the length of the reading challenge.
At Big Lake, this initiative has become a community effort. The Big Lake Parent Group Association (BLPGA) has generously provided bicycle locks and helmets for past winners, ensuring that students can safely enjoy their prizes.
For more information about the Bikes for Books program, visit the Skagit Valley Masonic Lodge #36 website at district9wa.com/skagit-valley-lodge-36.

Ice Bucket Challenge
Lutes takes the Plunge for Heart Health!
This week, Big Lake Elementary School Principal Matt Lutes braved the cold as a bucket of ice water was dumped over his head, all in the name of raising awareness and funds for heart health!
The frosty moment kicked off the school’s heart health campaign, a program designed to educate students about taking care of their hearts and brains while encouraging kindness, gratitude and stress management.
The school’s efforts include fun activities and exciting incentives to motivate students and staff. For every $2,000 raised, another teacher will take the ice bucket challenge. The class that raises the most will earn a movie, pizza, and donut party during PE, while the whole school is working toward the ultimate goal of earning a movie or special show during lunch.

WIC mobile app now available in 22 languages
New language options enhance WIC access for families across Washington state
OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is pleased to announce that WICShopper, the free smartphone application for families in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, is now available in 22 language options for Washington state participants. This expansion provides a better shopping experience for non-English speaking families enrolled in the program by offering real-time translations of WIC benefits, along with other resources like recipes, lists of participating retailers, and more. It is estimated that 90% of WIC participants in Washington use the WICShopper app.
“Washington state’s WIC program serves a diverse population who speak a variety of languages,” said Michele Roberts, Assistant Secretary for Prevention and Community Health, DOH. “Supporting WIC participants in their preferred language is a crucial way we can work towards eliminating accessibility barriers. Our hope is that this expansion makes it easier for participants to access vital nutrition benefits and support healthy choices for themselves and their families.”
Since its 2018 launch in Washington, the WICShopper app has been a valuable tool for WIC participants, offering a range of benefits including:
- Shopping Assistance: The app helps participants identify WIC-eligible foods and locate nearby stores, farmers markets, and farm stores that accept WIC.
- Convenient Access to Benefits: Participants can easily check their WIC benefits and balance at any time.
- Educational Resources: The app provides nutrition education and healthy recipes using WIC foods.
The languages selected for the Washington WICShopper app expansion were based on the state’s population demographics, and include Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Chinese (traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Dari, English, French, Haitian Creole, Kiswahili, Korean, Lingala, Nepalese, Oromo, Pashto, Portuguese, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tigrinya (Eritrean dialect), Ukranian, and Vietnamese.
The WIC program improves the health and nutrition of pregnant people, new parents, infants, and children under five by providing access to healthy foods like milk, fruits, and vegetables. WIC also offers health screenings, nutrition education, breast and chest feeding support, and referrals to other health and social services. Today, there are more than 200 WIC clinics in Washington state serving approximately 200,000 people. This includes nearly half of all babies born, 33% of pregnant people, and almost 25% of children under the age of 5 in the state.
To apply for WIC, Washington families can contact their local WIC clinic, submit a WIC interest form, and learn more about eligibility online.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!

Reporting Harassment, Intimidation or Bullying
The district uses a reporting system for harassment, intimidation and bullying (HIB) through SafeSchools Alert. Students, parents and community members can report HIB and other unsafe behaviors anonymously through phone, text, email or web. Students, parents and community members should utilize SafeSchools Alert as it creates a record of the report, and each incident must be investigated. Visit https://swsd-wa.safeschoolsalert.com/ to report an incident or use the alternative methods below.
App: Search for “SafeSchools Alert” in the App Store to download for free.
