From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
The arctic blast is here! It’s been a cold week, but, thankfully, the cold never sticks around too long in Texas. We hope you’ve stayed warm and safe, and we’re looking forward to thawing out next week with temperatures back into the 70s.
This Sunday is a regularly scheduled voters’ meeting at Zion. Our leadership and boards will present their goals for 2025. If you want to know more about what’s in store at Zion, join us at 9:30 am this Sunday in the sanctuary.
Your pastors want to remind you that one of the most important keys to your spiritual growth and health is to be in God’s Word. Reading His Word for even only a few minutes each day can make an enormous difference in your life. This year, we’re reading the Old Testament. If you haven’t started yet, or if you’ve fallen behind, there’s still plenty of time to jump in or back in. Just pick up a Bible reading challenge schedule at the welcome desk in the narthex or lobby to join in the fun.
In worship, we continue our series called “History’s Most Memorable Message,” where we’re studying Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. This weekend, we'll hear what Jesus has to say about proper judgment and discernment in Matthew 7:1-6:
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”
There’s something in human nature that is drawn toward rushing to judgment. But Jesus cautions us that our judgment must be careful, correct, and personal – we are called to judge our own actions before we judge the actions of others. This is difficult, but critical. Have you ever made an error in judgment? Learn how to practice better judgment this weekend in worship. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful historic sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our wonderful worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!

A Note to Boards and Committees about Fundraising
To help facilitate all the incredible ministries of Zion, sometimes, boards and committees host fundraisers. If you are a leader on a board or committee who is planning a fundraiser to support a Zion ministry, we ask that you fill out a fundraising request. These requests help us ensure that each fundraiser gets the time and space it needs, and that multiple fundraisers don’t get scheduled at once. Request forms are available through the church office. Thanks for all your support as we work together to manage the gifts God gives us to do ministry!
2025 Bible Reading Plan
Have you ever closed your Bible and thought “what did I just read?” Starting January 12, we will partner with The Bible Recap to read through the Old Testament. It will not only help you read scripture but help you love reading it. Click the button below for the reading plan or paper copies are available in the Lobby and Narthex.

Our family is so humbled by the number of folks that loved Roy and love us. The visitation and funeral were so filled with love for us. We thank you for the cards that meant so much to Roy and each time he would receive one, it made him smile. The reception was wonderful and the food was delicious. God has always been in charge of the cancer journey we were on and we know Roy is smiling down on each of you and our family. God bless each of you.

Lenten Devotions Point to Christ as Our Servant-Savior
Christ as Servant and Savior is the theme for LHM's 2025 Lenten devotions in English and Spanish. Dr. Kari Vo has penned "Servant of the Lord."
Suffering was never far from Jesus, so He gets it when our lives are difficult. In both versions, we are reminded that "Jesus understands what it is to be desolate in times of need, so when we suffer that kind of challenge, we can trust that Jesus understands our pain, and we have the assurance that our God will never forsake us."
"Jesus loves to teach us everything about life in the Kingdom, and part of that is sharing the Gospel,"says Chris Macky, LHM's content development manager and the Lenten devotion reader. "Jesus invites me, just as He invited His disciples, to follow Him and learn from Him. He calls all of us to catch people, and it is a privilege to do so with His help."
Lenten devotions begin Ash Wednesday, March 5, and conclude on Easter Monday, April 21. You can find them at lhm.org/lent .The "Tears of Hope" radio drama, which is adapted from a "This is The Life" television episode, will once again be available online this year at lutheranhour.org.
