Principally Speaking
I hope that everyone has been enjoying the first few weeks of summer. It has been very busy. We have welcomed our first, second, third, and fifth-grade students to Fox Ridge. Meeting our future foxes and introducing our staff to families has been a great start to bringing our community together. I appreciate our teachers coming in during the summer days as well as families for taking the time out of their busy schedules.
Our staff has come together to build our master schedule, and I have met with the principals of Munhall and Norton Creek to review the class lists their teachers have created for the incoming students. As we create our new class lists, there has been a lot of consideration and planning from the prior grade level teachers, the former principals, and the information each of you shared by completing the Google form last spring. I take all of this into consideration to create class lists from the three incoming schools and assign the teacher I believe will be the best fit for each group of students.
School Supply Lists
Below we are sharing the Fox Ridge grade level lists and a link below to order the school supply box. We are sorry for any confusion, the prior lists sent out earlier this spring were not updated by our teachers. Each school has unique teacher created lists and since many of our teams are new, we needed to wait for the updates. In addition we wanted to make sure that families had the best pricing, this process is something we have done at a school level. If you ahve questions regarding your list, please email me at michelle.woodring@d303.org

Summer Learning Opportunities for Kindergarten from our Reading Specialist
Dear Kindergarten Parents and Caregivers,
This summer your child can engage in Pre-K Heggerty Phonological Awareness lessons. Phonological awareness allows children to recognize and work with the sounds of language. These activities are sometimes called ear exercises because the focus is on hearing the parts or sounds in words. Your child will not be seeing these words in print during phonological awareness instruction. Using the summer lessons, your child will begin working on phonological awareness by focusing on larger parts within words such as identifying Syllables, (a part of a word with a vowel sound in it. For example, the word pencil has 2 syllables: pen - cil) and Onset-rime (breaking a syllable apart into its onset, the first sound in the word and rime the vowel and everything after. For example, in the word mop, the onset is /m/ and the rime is /op/). Then your child will shift to working specifically on hearing individual sounds within words. This instruction is a subset of phonological awareness known as phonemic awareness. A phoneme is an individual sound within a word.
Why is Phonological Awareness Important? Phonological awareness is a strong predictor of reading success. It is especially important at the earliest stages of reading development and is a foundation skill for reading and writing.
Here is the link to the free lessons. There are videos that accompany the lessons if you would like to sit with your child and have them participate along with the recorded lessons. You can also get involved and teach the lessons yourself if you are comfortable with reading the scripted daily lessons!
