Highlights of the Week
First of all I would like to say Happy Mother's Day to all our Donalda School Moms! The support that our moms provide our school and student learning is much appreciated!
This week three different days were set a part to raise public awareness. On Sunday, May 5, Canada recognized a solemn occasion, Red Dress Day, to raise the awareness of the devastating epidemic of violence against Indigenous women and girls. On Wednesday, May 8th was Hats On for Mental Health. This days is to help raise the awareness of the importance of mental health in our schools. I appreciate Deanna Bartlett, our FSL, as she works alongside our staff and students to build positve mental health in our building. The third we recongized was on Friday, May 10th. To be honest Spirit Bear Day is a day that I was not familiar with, and had to do some learning myself. May 10th is Spirit Bear's birthday, and an important day in the history of Jordan's Principle at the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. I would encourage everyone to do some research to better understand Jordan's Principal and how it is set up to support Indigenous children living in Canada.
Other highlights this week, included a field trip for our grade 1/2s. As a class they had been working hard to raise money for a local animal shelter. They were excited to take their donation to the Camrose Animal Shelter, get a tour of the facilities and play with kittens. While in Camrose they also stopped by the public library. Upon arrival back to school, the students reported that it was the best field trip ever!
Katrina and Danica represented our school at CWAJHAA badminton this week. The girls played well and displayed great skill and sportmanship. They ended up third in their pool of six, and then lost a close battle in the quarter finals. Congratulations for a job well done.
On Friday Carly Armstrong, a dietician that works with our schools, came and did a nutrition visit with our classes. Unfortunately, I was not able to sit in on the classes but heard great things from staff and students about her presentations.
Hiring Announcement
I am excited to announce that Chelsey Murat is coming in the fall to teach our junior high class. What the announcement does not mention is that Chelsey grew up in the Donalda area and attending school here. I would like to welcome her back home, and to our school community.
Seed Fundraiser - Live Plants Pick-Up
Live plants that were purchased through the Seed Fundraiser can be picked up at Echoglen gardens May 6th through May 21st.
Student of the Week - Katrina Siemens
Last week, when the class was asked for volunteers to help run the lights at the spring concert, Katrina was the only one who offered to help out.
Even though we didn’t end up needing her in the end, the fact that Katrina was willing to volunteer in this position, with no benefit for herself, was very admirable. Communities like our school depend on selfless acts like this. Great work!
Student of the Week - Lincon Bjorge
Last week, Lincon offered his science notes for copying to two of his classmates that were not present in class. He did this without being asked, and even stated that he put extra working into making the final project neat and tidy for his classmates.
Thank you for helping out Lincon, even when there is no benefit for you.
Student of the Week - Elizabeth Reid
Elizabeth is being recognized for being a great friend. Whenever there are a group of students getting along, smiling, and creating a song, or a dance, Elizabeth will be right there in the middle of it. She leads with patience, and an open mind to the suggestions of others.
Her patience, kindness, courage, openness, and unselfishness make Elizabeth a great friend to everyone. And that is worth celebrating! Congratulations, Elizabeth!
Student of the Week - Daina Griffith
Daina is a master observer and questioner. She digs deep and asks “why” in every subject. If my explanation isn’t sufficient, or doesn’t make sense, she will continue to ask until it does. Her thirst for knowledge has allowed her to learn so much this year, and this growth mindset will help her as she continues to learn in the future.
Student of the Week - Olivia Wainwright
Olivia is being recognized for her incredibly awesome behaviour and effort in the class and in all she does. Olivia always gets right to work on her assignments, does amazing work, and stays focused until the job is done. She is like the Energizer Bunny, she keeps going, never runs out of steam, and keeps a smile on her face even when the work may be hard.
Congratulations on your consistent, cheerful, caring, and confident effort in everything you do, Olivia!
Student of the Week - Kennedy Bachman
There's two great things about Kennedy; her innovative attitude and her drive to help solve problems. If there is ever a challenge our class encounters Kennedy gets her wonderful mind right to work. And in under a minute she'll have an excellent solution figured out. She is quick to volunteer, communicates her ideas, and is willing to do the work needed to help make her class, her school, and her world a better place for us all.
Congratulations on being an intuitive and eager volunteer, Kennedy!
