Biography of Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889 in London, England. His childhood was filled with many hardships, from his parents divorce, living in poverty, and having to support him and his brother by working in workhouses at a very young age after their mother was admitted to an asylum. Hardly being able to read and write Chaplin left school to join a clog dancing group. Not long after, he got the lead part in a comedy act and by the time he was 19 he was the most popular performer in music halls. Chaplin then moved to America and created one of the most iconic characters, "The Tramp". With this character he went past most social boundaries others would not go past and created high quality content. People would later say his films, "contains some of the funniest sight gags and comic sequences in film history." Chaplin also had an interest in politics and made a few films showcasing his views. Not everyone was in favor of these films, so he left America and moved to Geneva, Switzerland with his wife Oona O'Neil and their children. In 1964 he wrote an autobiography called My Autobiography where he wrote about the things he had experienced through life and his personal views on things. In the 1970's times had changed and Chaplin was once again commended for his amazing contributions to films. He was given and honorary Academy Award and in 1975 was knighted by Queen Elizabeth ll. On December 25, 1977 Charlie Chaplin died in his sleep in his home, in Switzerland. In all he acted and directed 82 films and made numerous contributions to the film making community. He changed film from how people viewed it, thought about it, and also changed acting itself, forever.
