Happenings at the Hive
October 4, 2024
Dear Solon Stinger Families,
We are thrilled to announce that students are now able to enjoy lunch in our newly renovated cafeteria! After weeks of construction, the bright, open space is officially ready for use. While there are still a few finishing touches to complete, the students are already loving the new environment and the chance to gather and eat in such a vibrant area. Thank you for your patience throughout the process – we’re excited to see how this new space will enhance the student experience at Solon Robinson Elementary School!
Yours in learning,

2024 Grade Information
During the 2022-2023 school year, our elementary schools joined our middle and high schools in reporting grades at the end of each semester. Previously, elementary report cards were finalized each nine weeks. We have shifted to reporting at the end of each semester so that students have a longer time to demonstrate what they know and can do. Our focus is on mastery learning and supporting a growth mindset in our learners.
The end of the first 9 weeks is Friday, October 11, 2024. While parents can always monitor their child's progress through our Buzz Learning Management System, this review period at the end of the 9 weeks is a great opportunity to assess how your child is doing. There will still be plenty of time to ask for help if needed, complete work, and bring grades up before the end of the semester when grades are finalized. If you have not yet verified your email address in Buzz, this is an important step to ensure that you are receiving all relevant alerts and information about your child’s progress. Instructions for accessing Buzz are linked here.
Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher should you have any questions about their progress or to learn more about how you can partner with us to support your child’s academic development.
We look forward to welcoming you to Parent Teacher Conferences in late October. During Parent Teacher Conferences, we encourage a collaborative dialogue that highlights how your student is transitioning throughout the first semester. We look forward to addressing questions parents/caregivers have, sharing relevant information (engagement, strengths, NWEA, classwork, socialization, areas for growth), and establishing on-going means for communication.
What's Happening in First Grade?
Mrs. Brown's Class
Mrs. Burford's Class
Mrs. Burford's students have been engaged in a series of fun and educational activities. They kicked off with a CKLA culminating activity, Doctor Day, by learning about health and the human body. On Apple Day students explored all things apples, including tasting and discussing the fruit. Students also participated in Read to a Stuffy Day, allowing students to practice their reading fluency by sharing stories with their favorite stuffed animals. It’s been a week full of learning, creativity, and fun!

Ms. Ready's Class
Ms. Ready's class celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday with an Apple Day. We learned all about apples, did an apple taste testing contest, and did Apple Jack math. They also culminated their Human Body unit in CKLA Knowledge with Doctor Day. The students had surgery centers where they fixed up sentences, put math equation pills in the correct bottles, put math bones together, make a skeleton, and put the parts together for the digestive and respiratory systems. Lots of fun and learning is taking place in Ms. Ready's class!
Mrs. Sletto's Class
In Mrs. Sletto's class, students have been having so much fun! For Apple Day, students learned about Johnny Appleseed, made adorable tin pot hats, tasted different apples, and even played Apple-0 Bingo to practice their tricky words. They also kicked off their first Link Party, celebrating compliments with a stuffy day and a delicious ice cream treat.
To wrap up Unit 1 in Knowledge, students celebrated with a Fable Day, where they dressed up as their favorite fable characters, hunted for golden eggs, and made a Peter Rabbit craft that highlighted the moral of the story. Finally, they ended Unit 2 with an exciting Doctor Day, where the kids dressed up as doctors and performed “learning surgeries” to deepen their understanding of the body. It’s been a fantastic few weeks of creativity, exploration, and fun!

CPCSC Safety Night
The 3rd week of October is National School Safety Week.

Students in grades 6+ are welcome to attend with their parents, but we ask that you consider whether the content and length of the presentation would be best for your elementary children.
- Tuesday, October 22nd from 6-7:30 pm at Taft Middle School OR
- Wednesday, October 30th from 6-7:30 pm at Col. Wheeler Middle School
To help our team prepare for this event, please sign up to attend the presentation.
