"XELLO" 8th Grade Counseling Update
All 8th graders were introduced to a new program titled, "Xello". This program consist of interest surveys, career matchmaking and course planning. This year the goal was to share with the students how their courses are organized and selected for high school. The students had an opportunity to navigate through the program with the school counselors. While navigating, the students all created a 9th-12th grade course planner where they selected core classes and electives based on academic performance, assessment scores and interest. Selections made are NOT permanent, but just an opportunity to practice and explore with the program.
Next year, we will delve deeper into the different components with our 8th graders to help them begin to identify what they are interested in and various careers that align with those interests.
MYP School Counselors, Mrs. Henry & Mrs. Ambers
We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Cajigas has been identified as an ExploreLearning Gizmos Teacher Leader within Hillsborough County Public Schools! We commend her commitment to using Gizmos with her students and making a meaningful difference in student learning at Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy.
Learner Profile of the Month
Band Spring Concert
What an excellent concert by our band students and their director, Mr. Lambert!
Excellence in Action ESE Awards
Congratulations to our Excellence in Action ESE Award Nominees Ms. Santoro (Secondary ESE Teacher category) and Ms. Raquepau (Elementary Teacher category)who both received nominations from a York family. Ms. Raquepau won in her category and was escorted by her student, Olivia Jones.
Admirals in Action
Students in Mrs. Cossum's classes created portraits of animals available for adoption at the Hillsborough Pet Resource Center. They were communicators and wrote a paragraph from the animals perspective on why that animal would be a great family member. We hope that our "action" and caring for the animals awaiting adoption will encourage people to adopt and not shop for their next pet. Students' work will be on display at the Hillsborough Pet Resource Center. ✌️❤️🐾
Mrs. Kudia’s class taking on the role of inventor or engineer as we try to make the world a better place with our SHARK TANK inventions. Students had to be open minded thinkers to problem solve and come up with a shared design after researching the problem and what already exists.
Mrs. Weiner's class with their Green Team t-shirts that were graciously donated by a parent, Mrs. Garmaza. Green Team members work hard to keep our campus clean and help us remember to keep an environmental mindset!
6th grade Robotics students learned a little more about programming by working with SPHERO! We programmed it to draw squares and different types of triangles!
Kindergarten enjoyed some "outside" reading time for letter "O" in their ABC countdown!
PYP Art News: We have had such an eventful week. School beautification continues as we add our painted rocks to the VPK garden. Also, art portfolios go home this week!
Mrs. Gangis and Mrs. Hillliker's classes hosted a beautiful celebration for parents as students expressed gratitude for Mother's Day.
Ms. Malden's 1st grade class came to Ms. Crane's MYP Robotics elective class to learn a little bit more about what we do! Each MYP group got to come up with their own activity that they wanted to teach them and demonstrated how they are knowledgeable communicators!
Mrs. Kudia's 4th grade class collaborating to construct line plots with fractions, plotting data, then finding the range, mode, median as well as adding and subtracting fractions.
Mrs. Clark’s 5th grade students researched different biomes and developed a newly adapted polar bear (due to the melting of their Tundra biome)! Mr. Turner walked students through 3D designing on Tinkercad, gave lessons and printed their 3D creations! Thank you Mr. Turner!
Additionally, students typed a writing piece explaining their polar bears adaptations and new biomes. Finally, they communicated their designs/writings with their peers.
Thank you to the Coast Guard Auxiliary team for talking with our PYP students today about water and boating safety!
A note from Mrs. Washington: "Feeling appreciated!! Mrs. Washington loves her new t-shirt from Kennedy....and all the other thoughtful gifts and delicious treats from her students."

*Spirit t-shirts and jeans/jean shorts are only permitted on Fridays.
Cell Phone Reminder:
Students are not permitted to use cell phones in the hallways during MYP class period transitions and should only access phones during class if it is for a teacher-approved purpose. If you need to get a message to your student during the school day, please call the office. Thank you for helping us maintain an academic focus during school hours.
Reminders for a Safe Arrival & Dismissal
Reminder for morning arrivals: Students are only to be dropped off in the lane closest to York's office sidewalk. For our students' safety, please do not allow students to exit cars from the 2nd lane or from parking spots in front of the school as those locations require them to cross moving traffic in lane 1.
Reminder for dismissal: It is important for cars to stay in their designated lane and not switch/merge as it disrupts the dismissal process. Students are called to designated cones based on the order and lane that cars enter our campus. Please be sure to enter our line by 3:15pm while our staff is still out taking names for a quicker dismissal process.
**Please note a change in the flyer below: If emailing a change of dismissal, please email tari.carpenter@hcps.net and anna.avery@hcps.net **
