Principal Letter
Dear Families,
April is around the corner! Spring is here and all the wonderful adventures it brings. I have no doubt that April will fly by faster than we'd like. Our teachers and students will be busy preparing for the State of Ohio assessments. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be tested in English Language Arts and Math. 5th graders will also be tested in science. As always, getting plenty of rest and a good breakfast will help our students have a successful school day.
Stay curious and keep reading,
Gina Sackman, Principal
Fredericktown Elementary

Elementary Learning Highlights
Students enjoyed creating models of the 3-D shapes they had been studying. Students used proper geometric terms to identify how many faces and vertices each shape had.
Read Across America!
We celebrated Read Across America. Our theme this year was Pets in honor of the newest edition of Dav Pilkey's Dogman book.
Guest readers included Mrs. Lindeman and Mr. Falk. They read books about cats and dogs and other pets!
Music
Music is all around!
Kindergarten: Students are learning about quarter notes and eighth notes and how rhythm differs from steady beat. We are also practicing our locomotor skills by marching, hopping, tiptoeing and skipping to the steady beat in a Leprechaun song.
First Grade: We are continuing to practice our melodic singing and practiced matching pitch with some independent singing as we played a game called “Mr. Potato Head”.
Second Grade: We have been practicing our melodic singing with do, re, mi, so, la and before spring break we learned how to improvise a rhythm in what we would wish for if we caught a leprechaun.
Third Grade: We completed our paper quilt squares for our version of a “Star Spangled Banner” American Quilt. Pictured are Miss Grieser’s students working on their squares and also the completed project.
Fourth Grade: We have advanced to the Yellow Belt song, “Gently Sleep” in the Recorder Karate curriculum and are practicing our singing as a group in a round.
Fifth Grade: Band students are continuing to rehearse our musical selections for our spring concert (Date: Wednesday, May 7 @ 4:30pm). Please continue to encourage your students to practice at home! Recorder students are advancing to more difficult songs in the Recorder Karate curriculum. They, too, can practice at home! We have goals of earning the Black belt by the end of the school year!
Learning Lab
The Learning Lab has started implementing a new keyboarding program with Typing.com
Thus far, the fifth, fourth, and third graders have had the opportunity to practice multiple times. Earlier this month , the second graders tried it for the first time.
First and Kindergarten will have a slow roll-out as to best meet their developmental needs.
STEAM
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade used the new Sphero coding robots. They had to create code to complete 6 different challenges! They are getting good at coding. Jason Burgholder joined us to share his expertise about bridges. He has designed and inspected bridges as an Ohio civil engineer. His knowledge will support our bridge unit that students will complete after spring break.
Fourth Grade
The fourth grade learned how to drive and code the new coding robots that we received from our Batelle grant. The robots are a lot of fun and challenge students to problem solve as they build code! They also got to hear from Juston Streby of Streby Design. He shared with them how he has designed many local houses and buildings. This will support our upcoming project after spring break.
Third Grade
Second Grade
Second grade finished a unit on magnets. They learned about push, pull, repel, attract, and friction. They explored this new vocabulary and then built a race track for a car using magnetic force.
First Grade
First grade has learned how to code!! They learned a new program called Scratch Jr. that introduces students to block coding. It was fun to watch them program characters to move and talk!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten built strong bridges to go along with The Three Billy Goats Gruff. They worked hard to ensure the bridge was tall enough and wide enough so the troll could not get the goats.
Library
We will not be sending home overdue notices. There are some library software problems that we need to address before we can move forward with reports.

Testing Tips
General Monitoring of School-Issued Devices
Please be aware that the Fredericktown Local School District, either directly or through a technology provider, is electing to generally monitor all school-issued devices (as that term is defined by R.C. 3319.325). The monitoring will include the following features: location tracking and student interactions with school-issued devices (e.g., keystrokes and web-browsing activity). The District generally monitors these features for the noncommercial education purpose of instruction, technical support, and/or exam proctoring. Additionally, these features are generally monitored as a necessary precaution for preventing and/or responding to threats to life or safety.
Reminder about Smart Watches:
Smart watches can not be used during school hours as communication devices. We want our students focused on their learning.
