After several months of searching for the right person for Holy Ghost Catholic School, we have found someone the interview committee believes will make a very good fit for the school.

Nichole Dominguez-Chavez has graciously accepted the position as the new principal of Holy Ghost Catholic School.

Mrs. Dominguez-Chavez has been an active Archdiocese of Santa Fe member for many years. We are blessed to have her to guide and support one of our schools. She will start her position with us on March 13, 2023.

We moved back into the Elementary Building on February 23, 2023, after having three consecutive days of zero readings from the New Mexico Gas Company. All equipment has been removed from the parking lot, and the asphalt has been patched. The NMGC will continue monitoring for the foreseeable future. Once again, we appreciate your support as we worked to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Since we are back in the Elementary Building, we are back to normal procedures for late arrivals, early pick-ups, etc. Please contact Kara in the office if you have any questions.

Please remember to watch for text messages and phone calls to alert you to any delays or changes in our school day due to weather conditions. We follow APS guidelines for inclement weather delays and cancellations. If it is a delayed day, we will not have Woody Young. Our school day starts at 10:00 am. Children should be dropped off at 9:50 am. Children will not be allowed to go into the gym before school on delayed days.

• If you order your yearbook BEFORE March, 17th the price is $22.
• After this date, the cost increases to $27.

Parent Teacher Conferences will take place March 13 - 16, 2023. Monday - Thursday

PreK - 5 conferences will be held in your child’s classroom and scheduled through Sign-Up Genius with each teacher. Conferences will be 15 minutes in length.

Middle School Conferences will occur in the gym Monday - Thursday from 3:45 - 6:00 pm.

Teachers will be in the gym each day and available to meet with you and your child for 15 minutes. If a teacher cannot be at conferences, that teacher will reach out to schedule a meeting.

As we move into March, we continue to enroll students for the 2023 - 2024 school year. Thank you for taking the time to enroll your child for next year. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to contact Kara in the office, and she will assist you in ensuring there is a spot for your child at HGCS next year!

On February 28th, the kindergarten through 4th-grade classes took a field trip to the Albuquerque Museum. The trip, including bus fare and admission, was sponsored by David Bower and Thorn Lang from the Albuquerque Museum Foundation. We were placed in small groups and guided through different museum sections by docents. The students learned about portraits, landscapes, pottery, and religious artifacts. The students were fascinated by the amazing variety and stories behind the many works of art.

Holy Ghost Catholic School participated in the Nuclear Museum STEAM Day. We brought out STEM-related technology tools to share with the community. Our staff and students helped museum visitors learn about and use Osmos, Indi Cars, and Sphero Robots. They talked with museum visitors about coding and other STEM activities that occur at the school.

Math Kangaroo USA is a national nonprofit organization with a mission of helping students love math. For 25 years, Math Kangaroo has organized an annual international mathematical competition for thousands of students in grades 1-12. Math Kangaroo's focus is on improving students' math scores and teaching them new strategies for solving word and logic problems, helping them with critical thinking and gaining confidence in the classroom. Holy Ghost has 10 students participating in the competition which takes place on March 16th!

“Zombeo and Juliet” will be coming to Holy Ghost School April 25, 2023. This musical, performed by our own 7th and 8th Grade classes, gives an amusing Halloween twist to the classic Shakespearian play, “Romeo and Juliet.”

Written by Kathy Martin and Phil Nohl, and directed by Sofia Pacheco, 8th grade, Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers are having some very supernatural problems. Star-crossed love, feuding families, rockin’ tunes and... zombies! The Montgomerys are a family of zombies. Their sworn enemies, the Decapitates, are zombie hunters. This hilarious musical send-up of Shakespeare’s most romantic tragedy is loaded with tongue-in-cheek dark humor for older teens and adults. And you can’t go wrong with dancing zombies — it’s certain to be a thriller! The Montgomerys are a family of zombies. Their sworn enemies, the Decapitates, are zombie hunters.

Prayer: The entire season of Lent is essentially one large prayer. As we pray, we work on our friendship with God. We encounter Him in prayer, listen to Him in prayer, and speak with Him. This strengthens our friendship and allows us to grow closer to Him. We repent of sin in the prayer of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession).

Fasting: Fasting is a form of penance that allows us to give up sin and grow closer to God. All those aged 18-59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. People of those ages are also obliged to abstain (keep from) meat on Fridays throughout Lent. Those with medical conditions are not bound to this obligation, but encouraged to fast in other ways. For example: my sister has some severe medical needs, so she fasts from social media instead of food.

Almsgiving: Almsgiving is essentially giving money to those in need. Many people fulfill this obligation during Lent through the use of a Rice Bowl. Here at Holy Ghost, we give to the Kids Against Hunger project. My father combines his fast with his almsgiving. He gives up snacks during Lent (trust me, he snacks A LOT). He then takes the money he would have spent on snacks and donates it to his Rice Bowl collection.

In other words: we give of ourselves to grow closer to God!
