Career Technical Education
SUHSD Offers pathways in 11 industry sectors.
A pathway is unique to an Industry Sector, it has an occupational focus, consists of similar functions, includes standards that demonstrate sequence potential, and is reasonable and appropriate for high school students. Each school site offers different pathways that focus on embedding work based learning in the classroom. To learn more about what pathways are at which high school sites, visit our website: https://ccr.sweetwaterschools.org/cte-pathways/
Work Based Learning
What is Work Based Learning?
Work-based learning (WBL) experiences are educational activities that allow students to gain real-world, hands-on experience in a professional work environment relevant to their field of study or career interests. These experiences can take various forms, including internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, field trips, guest speakers, and mentorships. Work-based learning experiences provide students with the opportunity to apply classroom learning in practical settings, develop essential workplace skills, explore career options, build professional networks, and gain valuable insights into industry practices and expectations.
Below are a few examples of our students demonstrating various ways you can support WBL for our Sweetwater Union High School CTE students.

College & Career Readiness
Compact for Success - SDSU
Compact for Success is a partnership between Sweetwater Union High School District and San Diego State University (SDSU). The program provides a clear pathway for students to pursue higher education by offering guaranteed admission to SDSU into non-impacted programs for eligible students who meet specified academic criteria. California College & Career Access Pathways (CCAP)
The California College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) Program at Southwestern College is an Advanced Scholastic and a Career and Technical Education Program that allows high school students in 9th through 12th grade to apply for dual enrollment at Southwestern College (SWC).
Every academic year, over 400 SUHSD students are enhancing their high school education and are earning college credit at the same time, thanks to a unique collaborative effort between the Sweetwater Union High School District, other surrounding charter schools, private schools and Southwestern College.
As part of the CCAP program, students are getting more mileage from after-school classes, like Psychology and Art. These "two-for-one" classes allow students to earn elective credits at the high school level and build up college credits that are transferable to Southwestern College or any University of California or California State University campus. Students accomplish all this without ever leaving their home campus.
Virtual Career Night Series
College & Career Readiness Department hosts four Zoom Webinars in the academic year highlighting various industries in our local area. This platform allows for our industry panelsits, SUHSD students, and parents to join virtually and learn more about what it's like to be in a career/trade.
