Swann Lion Times

In 6th grade, our Lions are studying expressions and equations in Math, learning about the Peloponnesian War in Social Studies, studying earthquakes in Science, and working with adventure writing in their adventure unit in ELA.

In 7th grade, our Lions are studying about nature vs. nurture in genetics in Science, expressions and equations in Math, talking about the end of WWII in Social Studies, and working on understanding the character development in their mystery unit in ELA.

In 8th grade, our Lions are learning about the the Great Depression in Social Studies, working on their science fiction unit in ELA, studying infectious diseases in Science, and working with geometry in Math.

All our students are currently reading novels in their ELA classes. 6th graders are reading adventure stories, 7th graders are reading mysteries, and 8th graders are reading science fiction. This weekend, talk to your students about what they are reading. What's the setting of their story? What's the theme? The tone? Who are the main characters? What's the conflict in the plot? What do they enjoy about the story? Is it similar to anything else they've read or seen? What were your favorite books in the same genre?

Our 7th grade physics students researched bridge designs, built them from tongue depressors, and then tested them for their strength! They piled on jars and cans to see how much weight their bridge could support.

This week, our Lions debugged mazes in Computer Science, practiced using their bows with string instruments Orchestra, built with Lego Spike Prime kits in STEM, transcribed music in Band, had health class, and practiced music with guest artists from UNCG. Ask your student all about what they are doing in their Encore classes!

This month, the Swann Pride is focusing on FAIRNESS! Watch this video about fairness with your child. What are some ways they show fairness at home? At school? In your personal life? What are some examples of fairness? Is fairness treating everyone the same? When might it be "fair" for people to be treated differently in a situation?

In North Carolina, all schools conduct their second set of safety drills in March. This month, students will participate in a tornado drill and a lockdown drill, in addition to their monthly fire drill. Please remind your students about the importance of practicing how we stay safe in an emergency and encourage them to take our safety drills seriously.

Remember the cut off time for early pick up in the afternoon is 3:45. After 3:45, please join the pickup line at the back of the school. This helps us ensure a safe dismissal for all students and ensures our buses are able to queue properly in front of the school.
