CATCHING UP WITH... Mrs. Edmonston
It's been another fantastic week at Canyon View Elementary School! We celebrated kindness with a week of kindness-themed spirit days and the Great Kindness Challenge. Students learned many different ways to show kindness during their classroom lessons with our School Counselor Ms. Gamelson and SSA Ms. Jenny. Our third grade students delighted parents with a patriotic-themed choral music performance led by Mrs. Serrano. On Friday, our Student Council hosted field activities during lunch recess on the lower field. The CVES No Place For Hate (NPFH) Club presented bullying prevention lessons to our TK-2nd grade classes. It was a great opportunity for our NPFH students to demonstrate leadership and help our younger students learn more about how to stand up against bullying and promote kindness.
This week we have a great week planned. Students will have lessons from their VAPA Vision teachers this Thursday, and team Team CV is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair! This week the PUSD Annual District Survey is open. Please take a few minutes to share your input and help shape the future of PUSD!
Let's Make it a GREAT week!

CATCHING UP WITH... Ms. Gamelson
This Week is School Counselor's Week!
This week is National School Counselor's Week! Check out the infographic below showing all that our amazing school counselor Ms. Gamelson has accomplished in just six months at Canyon View. What a difference she has made for our students! Did you know that your donations to the CVES Foundation supplement district funds and make it possible for Canyon View students to have a school counselor on site five days a week instead of four? Thank you for your support CVES!

CATCHING UP WITH... Picture Books for Our Families
Specially Curated Books from Ms. Alice Burge, CVES Library & Media Tech
On Monday, January 20, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the famous American civil rights leader who dedicated his life to achieving equality for all people. Although few kids question a day off from school, some may wonder why there's an entire holiday devoted to one man. It's because Dr. King's message of peace and justice touched so many.
The annual national holiday that commemorates him is a time to learn significant American history and reflect on valuable teachings that are still meaningful today. Below are some picture books to inspire discussion about the importance of speaking up and taking action to make a difference.
Speak Up written by Miranda Paul, illustrated by Ebony Glenn
When something really matters, one voice can make a difference. This spirited, vibrant picture book celebrates diversity and encourages kids to speak up, unite with others, and take action when they see something that needs to be fixed. Join a diverse group of kids on a busy school day as they discover so many different ways to speak up and make their voices heard! From expressing gratitude for a special treat to challenging a rule that isn’t fair, these young students show that simple, everyday actions can help people and make the world a better place.
Harlem Grown: How One Big Idea Transformed a Neighborhood written by Tony Hillery, illustrated by Jessie Hartland
Harlem Grown tells the inspiring true story of how one man made a big difference in a neighborhood. After seeing how restless they were and their lack of healthy food options, Tony Hillery invited students from an underfunded school to turn a vacant lot into a beautiful and functional farm. By getting their hands dirty, these kids turned an abandoned space into something beautiful and useful while learning about healthy, sustainable eating and collaboration. Five years later, the kids and their parents, with the support of the Harlem Grown staff, grow thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables a year. All of it is given to the kids and their families.
CATCHING UP WITH... Parking Lot Safety Reminders
IMPORTANT NOTICE: THE GREEN CONE ZONE IS FOR SPECIAL DAY CLASS FAMILIES ONLY
Additional Parking Lot Reminders
- Attention TK/K Families: You are not required to park and walk students to the gate for drop-off. Use our drive-through drop-off instead. We have supervision from the curb to the blacktop from 8:20 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Please continue to park and pick-up from the gate at dismissal.
- Attention Grade 1-5 Families: Do not park in the lot for drop-off or pick-up. Instead, use the supervised drive-through pick-up curb west of the office. This allows sufficient parking for our staff, and TK/Kindergarten families.
- Curbside Drop-off/Pick-Up: Use our designated drop-off/pick-up area to the west of the office only. Do not ask your child to meet you anywhere else in the lot. While this might seem faster for you, it slows down our system for everyone and creates a safety hazard.
