Evening Street Weekly Update
November 1, 2024
Happy Fall Harvest
I love this community! Thank you for supporting the children by either being part of the audience for the fall harvest parade, for making certain each classroom had a fantastic party or for making certain your child had something fun to wear for the parade. I do not know if we all appreciate parties more because of COVID days or if we all just want the best for the children, but I can tell you that the children really enjoyed the celebration this year. You are all amazing! Enjoy watching the Fall Harvest video below, just watching the children maneuver the steps in full costume is a treat. The staff and I totally appreciate the time taken to plan thoughtful parties. The children had a blast! We did have a number of children bring Reese cups to school; we are a nut free school. Please save any candy with peanut butter in it for home consumption.
Please remember that we do not have school this coming Tuesday, November 5th. Many of our schools are voting locations, which is the reason we do not have school. Young Rembrandt's will not meet on Tuesday. The teachers will participate in a day of professional development. The topic of our study will be Executive Functioning skills. The staff will learn strategies for helping children with skills needed to be a successful student.
On November 11th we will honor veterans of the Evening Street community with a 9:15 a.m. program. The Third Grade class will perform patriotic songs. Army veterans and Evening Street parents, Lisa and Shawn Corcoran, will be our guest speakers. Due to limited spacing, only third grade students, their families, and veterans are able to attend. If you would like for a sibling of a third grader who is an Evening Street student to attend, please mark that on the Veteran's Day RSVP. If you have digital pictures of your veteran, please send them to Mrs. Palmer at jpalmer@wscloud.org as she will be making a display to thank the veterans.
There is still time to register for the November 12th Tech Healthy Kids and Teen parent workshop. Lynsey Pearson, a parent who has children in Colonial Hills, Kilbourne Middle School, and Thomas Worthington High School will be at Evening Street to give parents tips on navigating social media.
This will be an hour workshop with 30 minutes allotted for questions at the end. The presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. Please RSVP as Lynsey will send the power point after the presentation to those participants who sign up. Feel free to attend the entire time or just for part of the presentation. This is a PTA sponsored event
We are collecting items to fill the Worthington Resource Pantry for the winter months. Thanks to those who brought in donations during the Fall Harvest party. We will be collecting food donations until November 13th.
Have a great weekend, remember this is the weekend we fall back one hour. Children may have a difficult time adjusting to the time change. Here are 5 Ways to Help Kids Adjust to Daylight Saving Time.
All the best,
Mary Rykowski

2024 PTA Reflections Contest Information
The PTA will be sponsoring the Reflections Program again this year. This year’s Theme is “Accepting Imperfection”
Reflections is a national arts program hosted by the National PTA for students K-12. There are six categories that students can participate in - dance, music, film production, photography, literature, and visual arts. Students can submit one piece for each category if they so choose.
Pieces are judged at the school level by the following age/grade categories: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. 1st and 2nd place finishers from each age group and category from the school level will be passed to the district level to be evaluated against other 1st and 2nd place finishers from each age group and category across the district. The 1st place finishers from each age group and category from the district will be submitted to the State PTA and then move on to National PTA, if they qualify.
This program is FREE for students to participate in.
Basic Student Guidelines: The following additional guidelines apply to student entries.
● Each entry must be the original work of one student only.
● A student may develop an entry inside or outside of the school.
● A student may submit entries in more than one arts category.
● Each student entry must be accompanied by a paper MANDATORY STUDENT ENTRY FORM which must be signed by the student and a parent or guardian.
● Student entries must include a title and an artist statement, which communicates the artist’s inspiration for the work and how it relates to the theme. The statement must describe the content and include at least one sentence, with at least 10 words, but not exceed 100 words.

Panorama Survey
We are partnering with Panorama Education, a third-party vendor, to support us in administering these surveys. The survey content will ask students in grades 3-12 to self-reflect on Sense of Belonging, Self Management, Emotion Regulation, Social Awareness, and Supportive Relationships.
During the 2023-2024 school year our District partnered with Battelle for Kids and a community design team consisting of students, Evening Street families, community members and support staff.
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to educate the children in our district. As you may already be aware, building our well-being and social-emotional learning skills is an important goal for our school this year and every year. Over the next few weeks, students will participate in several exercises to better understand these concepts and to reflect on how they perceive these skills in themselves.
As we have done for the last four years, we will be asking for your child to reflect on his/her own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey. The survey shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes to complete and will be administered during a two-week window from 11/4-11/15.
Staff, teachers, and administrators created a Worthington Schools Portrait of a Learner. The Design Team worked to answer the following questions during that process, which led to our District Portrait of a Learner:
- What are the hopes, dreams, and aspirations that our community has for its students?
- What are the skills and mindsets our children need for success in this rapidly changing, and complex world?
- What are the implications for the design of the learning experiences and equitable access to those experiences we provide in our school system?
Aligning our survey topics with our Portrait of a Learner Competencies and elementary and middle school Learner Profiles will help to support our work in building these competencies.
Student voice matters to us, and their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences in how we can improve and adapt our instruction to meet their needs. If a student doesn’t feel like they have enough information to answer a question, they will be able to skip the item altogether.
If you have any questions about the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) survey, please don’t hesitate to email me at mrykowski@wscloud.org
Respectfully,
Mary Rykowski

Living the Portrait Being a Leader, Thinker and Friend
Evening Street graduate Ashley Root returned to Evening Street to educate fifth graders about snakes. She shared her snake, Cherri, with the fifth grade classes. Friend Cici Saving co-facilitated the presentation. These eagle grads are living the Portrait by sharing their learned knowledge and demonstrating leadership.
Mrs. Szabo's second graders were thinkers and leaders when they participated in a design challenge to make a catapult that could launch a pumpkin candy. Much fun was had in the learning process, as you can tell by the smiling faces!
