WEB Wednesday: Compassion & Kindness
6th Grade W.E.B. - Walking in Another's Shoes
This month's 6th grade WEB lesson was called "Walking in Another's Shoes." We talked about what the words kindness, compassion and empathy mean. We watched a video about kindness. In the video a person was making fun of someone homeless for not having shoes. A girl gave the homeless person shoes and was able to positively influence the boy making fun of the homeless person. After the girl gave him shoes the boy quickly apologized and felt bad for his actions. The video taught us about compassion, empathy and kindness. Next we designed a sneaker that talks about positive traits about ourselves; who we are as an individual both inside and outside of the classroom. We then hung our sneakers on the outside of our lockers. The message that we learned from this lesson was that Empathy + Action = Compassion.

7th Grade W.E.B. - Throw Kindness Like Confetti
We started our WEB Wednesday by talking about the word compassion and kindness and how we can show compassion for others. We talked about helping the less fortunate and doing nice things for others without expecting things in return. We watched a video about someone stepping in and doing something nice for a homeless person by giving them a pair of shoes and money after someone was unkind to them. We then wrote 3 nice things that we had done for another person that showed kindness or compassion. We completed the post it notes and hung our post-its on the door with the saying "Spread Kindness Like Confetti."

8th Grade W.E.B. - Chain of Kindness
The 8th grade class watched a video of different scenarios and identified times when different characters displayed compassion or kindness. We talked about 100 different ways to be kind to another person. We were then given 2 strips of paper and wrote down kind things we did on one strip and a way we can show compassion to another person on the other strip. We then took the two strips and made it into a heart. We took every 8th graders heart and stapled them together making it into a giant chain of kindness and compassion and hung it in the cafeteria for people to read.

6th Grade Mental Health Fair
On February 26, our 6th grade students took part in a Mental Health Fair. MHAWNY (Mental Health Advocates of WNY), Depew Family Support Center (Ms. Flippen), our PE teachers (Mrs. Ahmed & Mr. Kling, Ms. Wojtas (student teacher)), Health teacher (Mrs. Wilson), Counselors (Mrs. Banasik & Mrs. Ryder) and our nurse (Mrs. Martin) worked together to bring this event to our 6th grade students. Students had the opportunity to visit various stations that included:
Coping Skills Trivia - A game that prioritizes defining, identifying, and exploring the concept of coping skills.
Breathing Station - Students practice and explore breathing techniques using bubbles, expandable balls, or creating a breathing stick.
Sensory Water Bottles - Students can make their own relaxation sensory glitter bottle.
Active Listening Drawing Activity - One student describes a picture and another student uses good listening skills to recreate it.
Rock Painting - Students will have the opportunity to design and paint a rock or write a positive affirmation on the rock.
Mental health is very important to student success in and out of school. It affects students' ability to learn, their academic achievement, their ability to build and sustain positive relationships, their physical health and well-being, and their ability to manage stress. This was a great opportunity for students to learn about their mental health and some ways to reduce stress and engage in self-care. A special thank you to our staff who coordinated and supported them with this event.
