Langley Library Newsletter
November 2024
Hi Langley families,
October was a busy month in the Langley Library! We had lots of fun library lessons on things like Reading Buddies (the 1st graders got to read to them for the first time!), what setting means (and how we can make a setting spooky), what different types of nonfiction are, how to use call numbers to find books, and where to search for books in the library catalog.
We also had our first two author visits for the year in October. Pre-K and Kinder heard from retired San Antonio firefighter and author Captain Conrad Gonzales (he was very funny, ask your student about his hats!). They learned a lot about being safe from the songs that he sang with them. First and second grade heard from author, illustrator, and Emmy Award-winning motion graphics artist Carter Higgins. She had writing samples from when she was in elementary school that she shared with students to talk about all the gifts that they already have as storytellers, then she shared her most recently published book Round and Round the Year We Go.
Kinder, first grade, and second grade will have an author visit on November 18th from San Antonio author Sharon Miller focused on her book Finley Finds Her Way. A form will be sent home soon that explains how to pre-order her book if you'd like a copy to be signed for your student.
November will include lessons focusing on Native American Heritage Month and gratitude, and Breakfast Book Club (for the 3rd graders who have signed up) starts November 4th!
Thank you for all of your support of the Langley Library and please reach out anytime I can be of assistance!
Ms. Mary Mosley
Langley Librarian
Storybook Pumpkin Patch - Thanks!
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Storybook Pumpkin Patch this year! We had 138 pumpkins on display in the library and they were all amazing!
November Author Visit
We have one author visiting during October! See the attached PDF if you want to pre-order a book to be signed. The deadline is November 15th.
November 18th
Sharon Miller is a San Antonio author and will be presenting to Kinder, 1st Grade, and 2nd grade. She will share her book Finley Finds Her Way, an adorable picture book about an American tree frog who escapes from her zoo enclosure and makes important discoveries about herself along the way.
October in the Library
Captain Conrad singing and dancing with the Kindergarten and Pre-K classes! If you look closely, you'll notice that the teachers got put on the spot and were singing and dancing too.
Here's author and illustrator Carter Higgins showing off her art from when she was their age to a group of 2nd graders.
Here's some of the first graders reading to their Reading Buddies!
Here's some of the 3rd and 5th grade classes doing different activities for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Bagels & Books: Sessions for Parents/Guardians
Come join Ms. Mosley in the library (from 8:35-9:05 a.m.) after you drop your student at their classroom after DEAR time to do some learning about literacy! Bagels will be provided and each session will focus on a different topic. These sessions are totally optional! It's just an opportunity for you to learn about how to support your student's learning at home.
- November 1st Session Topic: Concrete Strategies to Support Students with Dyslexia
Drop Everything and Read
We will have campus-wide Drop Everything and Read time again this year! Parents and caregivers can come check out their student(s) from their classes - make sure to bring your ID - and go anywhere on campus for 30 minutes of reading together. DEAR time begins at 8:00 a.m. (on the dates listed below) and ends at 8:30 a.m.
The next date for DEAR time is November 1st.
Celebrate your child’s birthday by donating a book to the Langley Elementary School Library in his/her honor. No need to bring in books - your child will choose from a great selection of brand new, popular titles available in the library for their Birthday Book. The cost is $20 per student to participate.
You can access the form to get more details and register for Birthday Book Club here or pick up a paper copy in the library or main office.
Library Policies - Students and Families
Here is some general information about our library policies. I want to highlight one big thing - parents and guardians can check out books! Reading to kids at home is so important and I would love to have family members checking books out of the library every day.
Library Hours
The library is generally open and available for students and families to check out/return books between 7:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. The library is closed for my lunch (which is 30 minutes sometime between 11:30 and 12:30, it changes day to day), when I'm in planning meetings with teachers on Wednesdays, and when I'm off-campus for meetings (once a month).
Parents/guardians must check in with the main office (with their ID) to get a visitor's badge before visiting the library.
Class Visits
Each class has a scheduled library visit every other week. Teachers can schedule additional time as needed. Students can return books and get new ones outside of their regularly scheduled library class.
Student Checkouts
All books are checked out for two weeks.
- Pre-K - Students can check out 1 book
- Kinder - Students can check out 1 book in the fall, 2 in the spring
- 1st through 5th - Students can check out 2 books
Parent/Guardian Checkouts
Parents/guardians can check out up to 5 books at a time for 2 weeks. They can come in with their child in the morning before school to check out/return books if they'd like to browse with them, but they can also come in by themselves anytime during the school day when the library is open.
Parents/guardians need to fill out a form so that Ms. Mosley can create a family account for you. You can pick up the form in the library or print it at home.
Makerspace Mornings
The library is open from 7:15 a.m. - 7:40 a.m. for Makerspace Mornings. Any student in 2nd - 5th grade is welcome to come, but once the library is full I send students back to their grade level hallway.
Counselors' Corner
Make sure to check out all the great things going on with our Counselors here.
