1968- A Turning Point
Tet Offensive
A series of surprise attacks by the Vietcong and North Vietnamese forces, on cities and towns throughout North Vietnam. It was a turning point because it changed the way the United States prepared for the war. It also shifted the U.S towards finding a face-saving way to get out of Vietnam.
Democratic Convention
In August, there were two candidates left which were McCarthy and Humphrey. The delegates opinion on McCarthy was the showing personal weakness Humphrey was too close to johnsons failed war policies. The people wanted the Vietnam war to end, so 10,000 people all over the country came to Chicago and rallied chanting, "Peace Now?" The mayor of Chicago Richard Daley dispatched thousands of police to control the crowds and it resulted in violence because a group of demonstrators wanted to march on the convention hall. Innocent bystanders were injured.
Assassination of Robert Kennedy
In the late 1963s, Kennedy flew to Texas to help win back some of the southern Democratic. While driving in an open car through a city to deliver a speech, somebody from the sixth floor of a building fatally wounded President Kennedy. It was a turning point because it created a media frenzy, which started the history of televison.
Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
In April of 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. plane was delayed because they heard of bomb threats. But that evening King didn't know he was delivering his last speech. While standing in a Memphis hotel on the second floor balcony Jesse Jackson shot Martin King Jr and he as pronounced dead. This was a turning point because all Martin wanted was peace, but since he passed away riots started in a 100 different cities.
Election of 1968
The people who were involved in the 1968 election was Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphery. Hubert Humphrey main point was to have no more violence. Richard Nixon main point was to have peace with Indochina. The results were that they elected Richard Nixon.
