Celebrating Black History Month
Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968)
Martin Luther King Jr. was a pivotal leader in the American Civil Rights Movement. He continues to be celebrated for his profound influence in advocating for nonviolent resistance and racial equality. His leadership in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and other key events of the movement brought significant attention to the struggle for civil rights in the United States. King’s eloquent speeches, including the iconic “I Have a Dream speech,” and his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, cemented his legacy as one of the most influential and inspiring figures in American history.
Harriet Tubman (1822-1913)
An abolitionist and political activist, Harriet Tubman is best known for helping enslaved people escape through the Underground Railroad. A former slave herself, Tubman’s bravery and determination in conducting numerous missions to rescue enslaved individuals, coupled with her efforts in the women’s suffrage movement, made her an enduring symbol of courage and freedom in American history.
Barack Obama (b. 1961)
Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, made history as the first Black American to hold the office. He served two terms from 2009 to 2017. His presidency was marked by significant milestones including the Affordable Care Act, the legalization of same-sex marriage, and a focus on progressive domestic and foreign policies.
Maya Angelou (1928-2014)
Maya Angelou was an influential poet, singer, memoirist, and civil rights activist, celebrated for her series of seven autobiographies. Her works focused on her childhood and early adult experiences, with I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings being the most famous. She explored themes of economic, racial, and sexual oppression, earning wide acclaim for her lyrical prose and powerful depiction of the Black experience.
Frederick Douglass (1818-1895)
Frederick Douglass was a social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York. Known for his eloquence, Douglass wrote several autobiographies describing his experiences in slavery and his life after the Civil War. He was a powerful voice for human rights and social justice.
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
“The first lady of civil rights,” Rosa Parks was an iconic figure who became one of the most famous Black Americans in the struggle against racial segregation. When she refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in 1955, her act of defiance and the ensuing Montgomery Bus Boycott became powerful symbols of the Civil Rights Movement, highlighting the injustices of segregation and inspiring further actions toward racial equality.

PTA Board Members Needed
We are in need of parents stepping up to become Board Members for PTA. Joining a PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) is important because it provides valuable support in many ways12345:
- Engagement and Involvement: PTAs encourage parents to actively engage in their children's education.
- Networking and Support: PTAs create a platform for parents to connect and build relationships with other parents who share common interests and concerns.
- Information Sharing: PTAs serve as a vital source of information for parents.
- Parental Involvement: Research shows that parental involvement significantly impacts a child's achievement and attainment at school.
- Fundraising and Strengthening School-Community Relationships: PTAs raise much-needed money for schools and strengthen relationships between schools and communities.
If you are interested in wanting to become a Board member, please contact one of our Adelaide PTA Board members by emailing them at adelaide.pta.fw@gmail.com.

Talk Topic: Screen Routines
Children and adolescents spend a lot of time watching screens, including smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles, TVs, and computers. On average, children ages 8-12 in the United States spend 4-6 hours a day watching or using screens, and teens spend up to 9 hours. While screens can entertain, teach, and keep children occupied, too much use may lead to problems.
Too much screen time may lead to:
Managing a child’s screen time is challenging for families. Your child is never too young for a screen-time plan. Consider the following as a guideline:
Screens are here to stay and can offer many positives. It’s never too early to develop a screen-time plan with your family. Let your children share their ideas and concerns. Some additional tips to keep in mind are:
· Sleep problems
· For children 2-5, limit non-educational screen time to about 1 hour per weekday and 3 hours on the weekend days.
· Familiarize yourself with programming to make sure it is age-appropriate.
· Lower grades in school
· For ages 6 and older, encourage healthy habits and limit activities that include screens.
· Talk to your child about what they are seeing. Point out good behavior, such as cooperation, friendship, and concern for others. Make connections to meaningful events or places of interest.
· Reading fewer books
· Turn off all screens during family meals and outings.
· Be aware of advertising and how it influences choices.
· Less time with family and friends
· Learn about and use parental controls.
· Encourage your child to learn other activities such as sports, music, art, and hobbies that do not involve screens.
· Not enough outdoor or physical activity
· Avoid using screens as pacifiers, babysitters, or to stop tantrums.
· Set a good example with your own safe and healthy screen habits.
· Weight problems
· Turn off screens and remove them from bedrooms 30-60 minutes before bedtime.
· Teach children about online privacy and safety.
· Mood problems
· Actively decide when your child is ready for a personal device.
· Poor self-image and body image issues
· Encourage using screens in ways that build creativity and connection with family and friends.
· Fear of missing out
· Consider your child or teen’s maturity and habits. The right plan for one family may not be a good fit for another.
· Less time learning other ways to relax and have fun
Camp Erin®-King County is a free, weekend, overnight camp for youth who are grieving the death of a significant person in their lives. Children and teens ages 6 to 17 (or 18 if still in school) attend a weekend camp experience that combines grief education and emotional support with fun, traditional camp activities. Led by bereavement professionals and caring volunteers, campers are provided a safe environment to explore their grief, learn essential coping skills, and make friends with peers who are also grieving.
The camp is facilitated by professional staff affiliated with Providence Hospice of Seattle's Safe Crossings program, as well as trained volunteers. Adult “Big Buddy” volunteers offer additional support and companionship for campers.
Camp Erin®-King County is free of charge to all participants.

LOST & FOUND
Check out Lost and Found
We are starting to notice several jackets and hoodies in our lost and found. If your child is missing their jacket, please have them check the lost and found by the Library.
Attendance Matters!
It is very important that your child(ren) attend school starting the first day of school. Being in school every day enables scholars to do well in school, and graduate from high school ready for work or college.
How to Support your Child:
· Develop a regular bedtime and morning routine.
· Help your child lay out clothes and pack their backpack the night before.
· Avoid missing school unless a child is truly sick, or is COVID-19 positive, and seek help if chronic illness is a challenge.
· If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other families for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
· Reach out to a family member, a neighbor, or another parent if you are having trouble getting your student to school.
· Arrange medical appointments when school is not in session.
· Avoid extended vacations when school is in session.
