Principal's Letter
Dear Greenbriar Parents and Guardians!
The leaves are turning color, the temperatures are beginning to fall, and the night sky is getting darker more quickly each day. Fall is here!
We are already in the second month of school, which is hard to believe. Many activities and initiatives have been going on and being celebrated.
We are once again a 4 STAR school. I’m so incredibly proud of our students, teachers, staff, and families. Thank you for having a focus on our students! Please make sure that attendance is on your focus list. Our teachers cannot make progress if the student isn’t in class.
Thank you for your support and have a wonderful Fall season.
Yours in education,
Jill E. Schissler
Principal
Greenbriar Middle School

STEM 5 Mathematicians use Invisible Heroes to Help our Ecosystem!
Did you know that almost half of all landfills are made of food waste, food that could otherwise feed the hungry or even create compost for gardens? Did you know that when food waste rots in landfills instead of naturally, it emits methane gas? And did you know that methane is a greenhouse gas that is 12 times more potent than carbon dioxide in warming the planet? This is a real problem, and STEM 5 loves solving problems just like this.
Maddie Thompson, last year's STEM expert, introduced the vermicomposting bins, or worm bins, to this year's STEM learners. We learned that worms can naturally decompose food waste so that it never reaches the landfill. We also learned that worms are one of many decomposers that keep our ecosystem in balance. Can you imagine if we didn’t have decomposers to transform waste into healthy compost?
This is an exciting, year-long measurement project that involves lots of data! We will measure temperature, food waste capacity and weight, rounding decimals, and observing moisture levels to ensure a healthy environment for these invisible heroes.
STEM 5 DoJo Party
Students had fun being code hackers during our STEM 5 DoJo party for September. They had to solve a series of brain teasers to get a code to try to unlock the different lock boxes. Many of our students cracked the codes and won the prize!
Lillian Kennedy an Inspiration to her Peers!
This year, STEM 5 generated their own 5Z House rules. They agreed on three inspirational quotes: "Be an open book," "Don't change yourself over a person," and "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." Lillian Kennedy embodies these statements and, hence, inspires everyone around her. She consistently works well with her teammates no matter the context. Her work ethic yields quality work that serve as exemplars to fellow learners. She is patient and kind to everyone she encounters. Her pleasant nature, quiet confidence and excellent character is precisely why we nominate her for our September Student of the Month!

She is a hard worker and comes to class daily to work! Riley has a Growth Mindset and continuously strives to do her best. She likes to contribute to class with her thoughts and ideas and is focused! Riley is a pleasure to have in class and is a positive role model for her peers and House 6X. Way to go Riley!
