School attendance after spring break
We wish you a restful and refreshing spring break (March 24-28)! In the face of challenging weather and illness, our teachers, families and students have persisted to keep learning and engaged. We appreciate everyone’s hard work and commitment to our school community. Thank you!
When school resumes on Monday, March 31, we look forward to welcoming our students back to school. As long as your student is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session. If you have questions about your student coming to school due to a health or mental health concern, please contact your school administrator, counselor, and/or nurse. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn and connect to peers and their teachers.
Here are some tips to keep your student healthy and avoid unnecessary absences from school.

Until then, we hope you have a wonderful spring break!
Regular attendance is important for every student
Your student adds a unique presence to the learning community, and the learning journey is richer and deeper when classroom peers learn together. Students with regular attendance (attending at least 90% of school days) are much more likely to do well in school and beyond. We are excited to partner with you in supporting your student’s learning and attendance this year!
This month, you will receive an automated message with your student’s current attendance rate. Since students are impacted by missing school whether or not the absence is considered excused, this message includes both excused and unexcused absences. If you need support from the school to improve your student's attendance please reach out to their classroom teacher or counselor. We want to help!
You can always view your student’s attendance through the Home Access Center by following the steps below.
Go to your student’s school website

Here are a couple of highlights from the last meeting:
- Advocating for Special Education Funding: The scbool district is pushing for an increase in the ADMw cap for students on IEPs from 11% to 15%, as it currently falls just under 15%. Superintendent Newton is also advocating for the elimination of unfunded mandates and increased high-cost disability reimbursements, which currently cover only about 41% of expenses.
- Budget Challenges Ahead: The school district is preparing for potential budget cuts ranging from $2 million to $4.5 million, depending on funding outcomes. While planning for various scenarios, DeMoss emphasized that the school district can no longer rely on reserve funds and must develop contingency plans.

Technology
Tech tip #7: Have regular Tech Check-ins to help kids reflect on their digital choices.
Parents often ask if they should check their child or teen's devices. They worry about invading their privacy or breaking trust. As parents, our children's safety should be one of our top priorities. Unfortunately, many kids and teens are exposed to unsafe situations online and it's our job to prevent these harms as much as possible, and to guide our children when they encounter predators, cyberbullying, pornography, and other digital dangers.
We need to check devices and apps, and we can do it in a way that is respectful and promotes conversation and teaching rather than "spying." We've found it helpful to check in every few weeks, but you may decide to do it more or less often depending on your child's age and digital habits.
Here are a few ideas to help you with a Tech Check:
Tell your child/teen that a parent/caregiver will check devices since the internet was not built with safety and young people in mind.
Check the devices with your child/teen in the room with you.
Scan apps, texts, email, etc. for any red flags. This could be anything that feels alarming to you.
Ask your child/teen about it. Let them know they are not in trouble, you would just like to know more. If changes need to be made to time spent, content being viewed, or online connections, make a plan together.
Thank your child/teen for the good choices they have made on a device and remember to keep checking in.
Remember a Tech Check isn't a reason to spy on your child, it's an opportunity to start important and vital conversations about your child's tech use and to make a plan on how you can help them to make even better digital choices.
Partnering on thoughtful technology use in schools
Our school district continues to take A Team Approach to Technology, working together with educators, families, and students to create a balanced and supportive learning environment. Through the Technology Task Force and ongoing conversations, we are committed to thoughtful decision-making around both personal and school-issued devices, ensuring students can focus on learning while developing responsible digital habits.
This school year, we have made several key strides in our efforts. The school board adopted a revised personal electronic device policy, reinforcing our commitment to a phone-free school environment to support engagement, focus, and well-being. We are also developing clearer procedures for school-issued devices, including guidelines on app usage, digital literacy, and classroom management strategies. As we continue this work, we appreciate the valuable input from our school community and will keep you updated on next steps. Thank you for your partnership in helping students navigate technology in a way that enhances learning and personal growth.
Family Partnerships
Celebrating Women's History Month
March is Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and resilience of women throughout history. This month, we encourage families to explore resources that highlight the impact of women in various fields, from science and activism to the arts and education. The Jane Addams Children’s Book Award organization offers a gender equity reading list featuring books that uplift stories of inspiring women and challenge gender stereotypes. Additionally, the National Women’s History Museum provides a collection of educational resources for students and educators, including lesson plans, biographies, and virtual exhibits. We invite our community to take this opportunity to learn, reflect, and honor the vital role of women in shaping history.
