SMCPS Athletics
- SMAC Championship Events 2024-2025 (subject to change)
The winner of the St. Mary’s County Cup will be based on regular season events between the three public High Schools in St. Mary’s County. The purpose is to have our athletes, students, staff, and community take more pride in the name on the front of the jersey and in the school they all represent. It will hopefully bring more support and excitement to in-county competitions. Each Varsity Team win will receive 20 points. JV wins receive 10 points. All ties will split the points. We will only count games that are conference games. We will also deduct points for any unsportsmanlike ejection from a game (player and/or coach). This could be a red card, double technical, or any ejection. This will be at least a five (5) point deduction.

Student-Athlete Spotlight
KAYLEN MILES
Kaylen is a senior on the Great Mills High School Volleyball Team that has jumped out to a 5-0 start to the season. As a captain, she has provided great leadership on and off the court. She plays the position of "setter" and has routinely provided crisp passing and clear communication while leading the offensive attack of the Hornets. Kaylen is currently serving at a 97.5% success rate with 21 aces. She also has a team leading 243 assists!
Student-Athlete Spotlight
KODY CLARKE
On June 18, 2024, Kody Clarke was hit by a car while he was training for the upcoming Cross Country Season. Kody was airlifted to the hospital with a fractured elbow, a torn tricep, extensive bruising, and a severe case of road rash. His projected recovery time would be a full year and his plans of representing Leonardtown High School on the Cross-Country Team were in jeopardy. Kody would require multiple surgeries, and an extended hospital stay. However, the doctors didn’t know Kody’s determination or his work ethic. In less than a month, the doctors had reduced his recovery time to six months. Then on August 14, less than two months after his accident, Kody was at Leonardtown’s Cross Country tryouts competing for a starting position and working with his teammates to become a force in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference and in the state. This month’s Male Athlete Spotlight belongs to Kody Clarke for being RAIDER Strong and an example of what we can accomplish when we push ourselves beyond the limits of what others place on us. Kody, we’d like to wish you and the rest of the Cross-Country Team good luck this year. Make this a season you will never forget!
Coach Spotlight
The Coach Spotlight for October 2024 is Anne Vallandingham.
Anne Vallandingham has coached Field Hockey for 28 years at Chopticon High School. Some of her accomplishments are watching her athletes and managers learn and grow in a sport they love, some go on to college and play, and others go on to lead successful lives as doctors, nurses, teachers, human relations and mothers/fathers. Some of her proudest moments are watching girls find their voice as women and find their value and place in the world from the field hockey field. Other proud moments are beating Huntingtown in 2016 to play Blake in the Regional Finals, and winning back-to-back Regional Titles. Anne's coaching philosophy is to provide an arena for women to learn and grow athletically, mentally, physically, and spiritually to become the best version of themselves using field hockey as the vehicle for this experience. Anne's favorite meal after a win is usually something from Salsa's. Keep up the good work Coach V.
