Board Buzz
Oct. 14, 2024
We offer a recap of this month's planning meeting of the Fayette County Board of Education as part of our commitment to providing timely updates for students, families, staff, and the community.
Top Takeaways
Academic Services
Meocha Williams, assistant superintendent for Academic Services, updated the school board on the work in classrooms this fall including focused instruction, high levels of engagement, and consistent monitoring of student progress. She also revisited our Portrait of a Graduate (POG), showing how schools are exploring and celebrating the first promise: becoming a "lifelong learner." Board Chair Tyler Murphy noted how we are being intentional to guide the POG work in a measured approach that drives the decision making. He also singled out lifelong learning as especially important as educators emphasize enduring skills that will help students handle whatever the future holds. "They'll be prepared thanks to this incredible work," Murphy said.
Student Support Services
Staff from Student Support Services shared the latest on services provided by our school counselors and family resource and youth service centers (FRYSC). Counseling Coordinator Antonio Melton noted we have 124 school counselors across the district supporting our students with academics, social/emotional, and career development. In the second portion, Raine Engle-Minichan (associate director for Mental Health Services and Social/Emotional Learning) described the purpose and activities of FRYSCs at the elementary and secondary levels. "They're a powerful group of people who are really making an impact," she said.
