ART
Hello Art Families,
The school year is off to an amazing beginning. We are working hard in each of the classes and we are getting to know each other week to week. Please check out Artsonia (www.artsonia.com), you'll be able to see your students' work there very soon. I have also linked the old accounts from Amy Greathead together, so if you had a student with her years ago at the IC/PC, the work will also be available for viewing. Students have class for 55 minutes once a week with me. I am new to the district this year, but not new to teaching art. My official name is Alison Winters Hanson, but many of the students know me as Coach Alison and have adopted Ms. Alison or Ms. Winters.
In 3rd Grade Art, we are working on creating original Monsters. Our focus is on line, color, and pattern, with a little silly mixed in. Students are using a variety of art media to create these creatures on brightly colored papers. In 4th Grade Art, we are working hard on ruler skills and learning about one point perspective. Week one focused on master shapes and week two finds us creating alphabet letters that will use perspectives and colors to really pop off the page. 5th Grade Art finds us working on measurement and ruler skills as well as basic sewing skills. Week one found us using a ruler to connect lines to create an interesting repeated pattern with pencils, week two has us stringing needles and using embroidery floss to draw those lines. All of the pieces are incredible and I am so very proud.
Your students are amazing and I am ever grateful for your support! We are having a blast in the art room. Please ask your students about these skills and projects--I hope you'll be as impressed as I am. If you need a username for Artsonia or are confused about use, please reach out.
Thank you!

LIBRARY
HI! My name is Angie Brauns, and I’m the IC Librarian. I have been enjoying our first library classes and getting to know all of our new readers at the IC as well as getting reacquainted with our fourth & fifth graders. Our third, fourth & fifth graders will spend their first visits learning the library routines and using the online catalog, call numbers & shelf signs to find books. If your student struggles finding those just-right books, please email me, and I can set up a reader’s advisory conference with them. It gives me the chance to talk one-on-one with them to learn more about their interests and find some good books they would like to read.
In the next few weeks, we will start introducing some makerspace activities that students can participate in while visiting the library. These will give our students the opportunity to create & collaborate with their classmates.
Are you interested in volunteering at our library? Please email me!

MUSIC
Aly Evans's Classes:
The music department is moving and grooving! This year we welcome our new music teacher, Mrs. Susan Larson, to the IC. Mrs. Larson has already brought lots of great ideas to the team, including the establishment of a Musician of the Month. This month the students are studying Black Violin, a violin and viola duo from Florida who use their music to challenge stereotypes and bring hip-hop/classical fusion to a wider audience.
This month the music students are using small instruments like rhythm sticks and boomwhackers, singing, and learning the routines and procedures to be successful in music class. The theme of the 5th grade concert will soon be revealed, and we hope that the students will show you the groovy circle dance we taught them that goes with the '70s classic, "September".
Susan Larson's Classes:
We are so proud of our students for how they are embracing our whole school theme "We Rise By Lifting Others" in our music classes by working together toward our music goals. All grades have been jumping right into singing, movement, listening, literacy readiness and playing classroom instruments. For those participating, orchestra has begun and it is so exciting to be learning brand new skills. During their time at the IC, all general music students rotate through instrumental units including drumming, ukulele, recorder and guitar.
This year we are introducing a new activity in all grades called Musician of the Month. Each month we will feature a new artist or performing group and embed their music into standards based activities. Our hope is to inspire all students to be life-long, active music-makers through featuring diverse musicians who act as musical role models. Our September featured group is the string duo, Black Violin, who fuse hip hop and classical music to challenge assumptions and share a musical message of hope and unity. Listen along to the music we are using in class by following our MHIC Musician of the Month Spotify playlist at this link or by scanning the QR code below. As each new artist is introduced, we will add more selections to the playlist, so check back often!

PE & HEALTH
Welcome back!!!!! We are looking forward to another fun year of Physical Education! Your child will have Physical Education 3 days a week. These will be taught by Mr. McGivern and Mr. Sheard.
During the three days of Physical Education students will be learning new skills and activities to encourage them to live a healthy and active lifestyle. To help us with this, we ask that you send your students with tennis shoes to help them be as active in class as possible. During the first few weeks we will be going over dodging/fleeing activities as well as soccer.
Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. Looking forward to a fun, fit, and active school year!

MATH
Welcome back! My name is Ashley Maring and I am the 3-5 Math Interventionist/Instructional Coach. That means I get the best of both worlds. I get to work with both students and teachers! I work with students on their math skills and get to team up with teachers. Most recently, I was a third grade teacher here at the IC! Bridges is a new way of thinking about math. It's very different from the way that I was taught. I often hear from families that they aren’t sure how to do the strategies that their student is practicing at school. I invite you to take a minute to look at these handouts for a brief description and visual of the strategies we use here at school.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I'm happy to help in any way I can.
