Issue #17: December 6, 2024
Principal Corner
Happy Friday, Chapelfield families.
We welcomed our students back this week after our Thanksgiving break! Students came in ready to show PAWS. They were Positive, Acted Responsible, Worked Hard, and Showed Respect! I saw several students earn PAWS stickers for going above and beyond. They were doing the right thing when no one else was watching.
During the week, we also had fun. Chapelfield staff showed off their alma maters while students wore their Chapelfield spirit wear. We think it is important for our students to see that we were students and that we continue to love to learn.
The weather has gotten cold quick. We go outside when the temperature outside is 20 degrees or above. Please have your child bring their coat, a hat, and gloves. If you need a coat, gloves and/or hat for your child, we are happy to help. We have several that were donated that you can keep. Please email me at millern@gjps.org.
Stay warm! Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
Nikki Miller
Capital University was represented.
The College of Wooster even has 2 alumni present!
OSU had a strong presence with our Chapelfield staff.
Volunteers Needed for 3rd grade
Third Grade will be creating our annual Patchwork Pillows on December 19th. As many of you know, this is a super fun and memorable event for the third graders, but requires a lot of help! We are hoping to have more volunteer sewers with a sewing machine to help put together the student's patchwork pillows. If you know anyone who is available on December 19th from 12:10-2:30 p.m. with a sewing machine please use the sign up link below or email ginnt@gjps.org. Thank you for your support!

School Counselor's Corner with Mrs. Jasin
Last week in fifth grade we discussed teasing, joking and roasting. One of the more confusing experiences for students is how teasing can quickly go from harmless to intentionally hurtful. For our students this dynamic can be very frustrating because it’s so common and they can feel embarrassed and ashamed if they show that they are upset. In our time together, we defined different kinds of teasing and discussed topics that are off-limits such as appearance, skin color, height/weight, family dynamics, ability level, etc. We practiced how to communicate if they are in a situation where they are being teased about something they don't like. The main takeaway was that everyone has the right to define how they want to be treated and no one gets to tell anyone that how they're feeling doesn't matter.
If your child needs a warm coat, please reach out to the main office or Mrs. Jasin and we will fulfill your need.
Visitors
We kindly ask that ALL visitors follow the steps below each and every time you visit Chapelfield:
1. Once at the front, exterior doors of the school, press the buzzer. A member of the office staff will ask your reason for visiting Chapelfield.
2. Once inside the vestibule, you will enter your drivers' license or state ID into the scanner. ALL visitors/guests/guardians need to scan their drivers license EACH and EVERY time they visit Chapelfield.
3. Once your license has been scanned and processed you will be permitted to enter the main office area to pick up your visitor/volunteer badge.
4. If you have NEVER had your driver's licensed scanned at Chapelfield before, this will take a longer time. You will want to plan accordingly.
**As a reminder, if there is a non-guardian planning to visit Chapelfield for any reason (to eat lunch, read a book in the classroom, visit the bookfair, take your child to an appointment etc.), we ask that the guardian email the teacher and front office (gilzows@gjps.org ) to let us know prior to the visit.
Our Vestibule
The vestibule will be a place you have to wait if you are picking up a student, dropping off a book bag or lunch box.
The office is a busy place and there are times that we are dealing with student confidential issues. The vestibule will be a place to wait. It also allows us to keep our building safe. We want to keep students and staff safe including keeping confidential information safe. Thank you for understanding.

Art Room Update from Mrs. Karr
circles, triangles, and squares are used to draw all kinds of things including people. We practiced self-portraits with shapes on a white board before finalizing on project paper. After reading Harold and the Purple Crayon we were inspired to draw our own make-believe or real life story with one special color of their choice, just like Harold.
Second graders recently practiced their listening and drawing skills with a Mystery Picture lesson. Students followed step-by-step with the teacher but did not know the outcome until the very end. Once complete, they used washable markers and a wet paintbrush to add color. This week, we read Sky Color and began a landscape painting inspired by the story. Ask your child which colors they included in their sky!
Third graders just finished a collaborative project that combines Art with Social-Emotional Learning. First, we learned how to use analogous colors to create painted papers. Then, we read Sloth and Smell the Roses and discussed the importance of communication and mindful breathing when experiencing big feelings. Finally, students worked in pairs to create a large scale rose collage. As a follow-up, students have been enjoying some choice art time with collage materials.
Fourth graders prepped for their clay project by starting with a couple practice days. We do not use clay regularly so it’s important to familiarize ourselves with the routines and have some time to practice before the final project. Next, we looked at some inspiration (student work from previous years) and sketched a plan of our own desired project. This week, we began final projects by transforming a slab into a cylinder that will become a container or a mug/cup. Stay tuned- this is a Chapelfield favorite!
Fifth graders are also exploring 3D art… students are making Dragon Eyes! We began by sketching our concept focusing on shapes, colors, and textures. Next, we used colored pencil techniques to render the pupil and iris. Then, we cut out the rendering and glued it to the underside of a glass cabochon. We followed with some play-doh practice to learn some strategies for creating realistic eyelids, scales and details. This week, we began to use Crayola Model Magic to build the final dragon eye around our glass eye/cabochon. I can’t wait to see how these evolve over the next week!
