BSMS News from the Nest
October 2024
Hello Families!
Well the weather is definitely changing...the chill in the air has been very eye opening in the morning hours! A reminder that we will continue to go out for recess during the chillier months, so please help your student be prepared for the time outside. I know that getting middle schoolers to wear a jacket is like pulling teeth, but we can at least try!
Grade level newsletters below have been updated. Please review these documents so that you can continue to be an active part of your student's education. There are some amazing things happening here!
The end of the marking period is next Thursday, 10/24. Please check in with your students to make sure that they do not have any missing assignments, or work to complete prior to the end of the marking period. Reports cards will be post to Sapphire on Tuesday, 11/5. It is also advisable for parents/guardians to log into Sapphire and check their student's progress to date as well. If you are unfamiliar with that process, there is a video tutorial below that outlines the steps.
Fall Conferences are quickly approaching. They will be held on Thursday 11/7, and Friday 11/8. As in prior years, we will be using myconferencetime.com/bsms to schedule conferences. The window will open at 8am, Friday 10/25 to schedule times to meet with teachers. We prefer to meet with families in person, but if you need to schedule a Zoom or phone call during your scheduled conference time, please note that in the comments section when signing up.
Fall musical tickets are on sale. It is reserved seating, so be sure to get your order done asap to get the best available seats. The production this year is Finding Nemo, Jr., and will be held the weekend of November 15th-17th. The staff and students have been rehearsing for months, and I hear that we are in for a great show! Information regarding how to purchase tickets is provided below.
There are some spaces available for our Paint Night. It is being held Wednesday, Oct. 30th from 5:30-7. Please complete this form to join us for a night of creativity and fun. Hope to see many of you there!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shelley

Grade Level Updates
Linked below are the updates from all grade levels, including their Creative Arts Classes.
PBIS Corner
Our PBIS framework has gone to new heights this school year. Last year, we nearly 7,000 positive behaviors recognized for the entire year. This year, in just the first marking period alone, teachers and staff have recognized 3,498 positive student behaviors. To say that we are exhilarated with this number is an understatement. As a building, we continue to look for Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Engagement from our students on a daily basis. Students have enjoyed earning PBIS rewards in addition to the positive emails home to parents. Some of the most popular choices have been using our ping pong room, comfy chair for the day, and, of course, sitting in our loft or outside to eat lunch with friends. This past Thursday, we had our first school-wide assembly for the year where the whole school came together to celebrate our wonderful accomplishments. Students were randomly selected to play Minute to Win it games while their classmates cheered them on. Teachers also got a chance to join in on the fun. Our fall athletes, as well as students participating in next month's musical, were also recognized during the assembly. It was so much fun and a great way to recognize all of student's hard work in and out of the classroom.
While we continue to recognize our positive behaviors, it is always important to take note of the number of office referrals and incidents that happen in the school as well so that we can continue to teach the expectations that we set forth here at BSMS. We have seen an uptick of negative behaviors over the past month. Since the beginning of school, we have had 85 student incidents documented in our system. We are down 10% from last year at this time which is something to boast about. We believe every mistake is a learning opportunity for our students as they grow into young adults and hope that by holding students accountable for their actions, we can prevent future incidents from happening. Many of our incidents are happening during unstructured times such as recess, lunch, and on the bus. Please continue to reinforce to your student that rules apply no matter where they are in the school building.
Spirit Week
The week of Oct7-10th was Fall Spirit Week here at the middle school. We had a blast celebrating with our students. We had twin day, teacher/student SWAP day, Anything but a Backpack, and Sports Day. Here are some of the highlights from the week.

Nurse's Memo
Remember to send water bottles to school with your child. Headaches, dizziness, and low energy
levels can result from decreased water intake.
If your child requires medication for use at school, a parent-signed physician’s order is required.
Please schedule a time with the School Nurse to deliver medications and refills. Students need to be free from vomiting, diarrhea, and have temperatures less than 100.5 F for 24-hours before they return to school, without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc.
Please return the corrected emergency cards as soon as possible so the nurse may provide over-
the-counter-medications as deemed approved by the parent/guardian.
The state of Pennsylvania requires 6th Grade Physicals/Immunization records and 7th Grade
Dental Exams. These forms/records should be returned to the nurse before December 31, 2024.
The above required forms can be found https://www.bermudian.org/services/health-
Dates to Remember:

Attendance and Family Trip Procedures
Absences
Regular attendance at school is essential to maintain a good academic standing. Excused absences include: illness, family emergencies, prearranged doctor and dental appointments, and pre approved trips and school activities. Other absences are unexcused unless prior approval is given through the main office. Prior approval should be requested by the parent or guardian in writing prior to the day of absence. After three unexcused absences, a notice of Illegal Absences will be issued. After a 1st Notice of Illegal Absences has been issued, a parent meeting will be scheduled in a attempt to support the family and student with attendance. Future illegal absences may result in the school presenting the attendance issue before the local magistrate. This can be monitored in your Sapphire Parent Portal.
Tardies
This year we will again closely monitoring student tardiness. For each accumulation of 65 unexcused minutes, the student will receive what will equal to a 1/2 day unexcused absence.
Excuses
Please provide the school with written documentation for all tardies and absences. Absences will be marked as unexcused until an excuse is provided. Upon returning to school after an absence, students must report to the office with written documentation signed by their parent/guardian. All written excuses must be provided with five school days of the absence.
There are numerous options for providing an excuse/note for your students' absence(s). Any of the following are acceptable methods to submit this documentation. As always, if possible please provide medical documentation.
Complete the electronic form at this link English or Spanish
Email a note/excuse to Mrs. Clouser at kclouser@bermudian.org at the middle school.
Send in a written note/excuse directly to the office with the student.
Excused Family Trips
A total accumulation of 10 excused family trip days for the school year is the limit allowed per student. Any additional days will not be approved. Please provide a weeks notice prior to the trip.
This form is available to request permission for your child's absence from school to participate in an educational trip. All trips must have prior approval. Please fill this form out and submit to your child's building secretary/principal for approval.
