Irvington Weekly Newsletter
October 4, 2024
It's underway...please join us for our annual Fall Festival! It runs 3-6pm today! Hope to see you there!
Picture Day is October 16
Picture day is Wednesday, October 16! You will find information in your child's Friday folder.
Lots of Openings in October Lunch Sign-Ups!
Almost 200 students make their way through the lunch line each day at Irvington, and it makes a big difference to the kitchen staff when parents help serve lunch. Ms. Rie can focus on preparing and restocking so all the kids have healthy choices, and parent servers help make the line go a lot faster! It's a great way to see your child during their school day and to see how the kitchen at Irvington works.
The back-to-school enthusiasm has waned, and we have a lot of gaps in the October calendar. Please consider signing up for a slot here. If you've never served lunch before, you'll have to be a PPS-approved volunteer first. Please contact Betsy at bihuigens@gmail.com with any questions.
Finally, we maintain a list of "back-up" lunch helpers who could be available to fill last-minute vacancies. Please let Betsy know if you'd like to be added to the group text.
Walk + Roll to School Day Next Wednesday
The Green Team invites all Irvington students to try walking, biking, or rolling to school on Wednesday, October 9! Join a walking group:
- 7:40am - NE 7th & Stanton
- 7:40am - NE 7th & Thompson
- 7:35am - NE 24th & Brazee (this one meets every Wednesday!)
If you live too far to walk or bike, consider parking a few blocks away and walk in from there. There will be some small prize giveaways & snacks at school for all!
Breakfast Starts at 7:45
Just a reminder that breakfast starts at 7:45. In order to maximize learning, teachers bring in their classes starting with the 7:55 bell, so many students feel rushed to eat their breakfast if they arrive closer to 8:00. When possible, if your child would like breakfast, please bring them as close to 7:45 as possible so they can eat and walk in with their class.
PTA Meeting October 21
Please save the date for the next PTA general meeting on Monday, October 21, 5:30-7:30pm! This meeting will feature special guests Mr. Greer and Rachel Oh, the principal and PTA president of Harriet Tubman Middle School respectively. We’ll also hear a new proposal for sound panels in the cafeteria, an amendment to our 2024-2025 field trip budget, and host an engagement session on our mission, vision and values. Please plan to come!
¿Por Qué No? Restaurant Fundraiser Night
¿Por Qué No? Taqueria is all about supporting the local economy, using high-quality, sustainable ingredients & making delicious food for this awesome community! A frequent and generous donor of Irvington School, let's give back and make it an awesome Restaurant Night Fundraiser!
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, October 9, 11am - 10pm. ALL types of orders (in person, take out, delivery, DoorDash, drinks & merch!) go towards our fundraiser, and 10% of ALL sales from the Mississippi location (3524 N Mississippi Ave) will be donated to our school! Check out their menu here and hop online or call (503) 467-4149 to order! Thank you ¿Por Qué No?!
First Family Gym Night Next Thursday
The first of many Family Gym Nights is next Thursday, October 10, from 5:30-7:30pm in the Irvington School Gym! Bring the whole family! We’ll have music and will cycle through a variety of organized games during the two hour block. Past activities have included bowling, obstacle courses, community-building games, soccer, floor hockey, parachute, kids vs. adults games, and more.
Enter through the gym doors at the back of the school. Knock loudly when you arrive. Please come by any time during open hours. All kids should have a supervising adult present. Questions? Email familynight@irvingtonschool.com!

Message from Abby, Our Garden Teacher
My name is Abby, and I am the new Garden Educator at your school. I am writing to invite you to a garden work party on Tuesday, October 15, right after school, from 2:30-4:00pm. We will be working to prepare the space for Winter. If you are available, please consider spending some time with your student in the Garden, or just come by to say hi. There will be light refreshments. Rain date is the following Tuesday, October 22.
Fun Run: Still Time to Donate
Thank you to all the teachers, staff, parents, caregivers, family, friends, and volunteers for supporting, cheering, and sponsoring our students in the Fun Run a week ago! The Irvington PTA proudly financially supports field trips so that they are all free for all students. All funds raised for the Fun Run will go towards continuing this priority! You still have until the end of next week to collect your pledges and any more donations. Cash and checks should be returned to your student’s teacher or the office with pledge sheets attached no later than Thursday, October 10, and the Pledgestar online site will close then as well. https://pledgestar.com/irvington/ Thank you, Irvington Eagles!
Green Team Meeting
Join the Green Team for their second meeting of the year next Thursday, October 10, at 7:30pm at Pocket Pub. No problem if this is your first time, you can just show up! The Irvington Green Team works to raise awareness about the environment and promote sustainable practices in our school. We encourage recycling, saving energy, and reducing waste. Our team leads projects to lower the school's carbon footprint and teaches others about the importance of protecting the environment.
Families of Students of Color Meeting <REPEAT>
Families of Students of Color (FOSOC) is a social group for families to get together, share a meal, and get to know one another. We also take on different projects, depending on the year.
