Parent Input Form: Class Placement for Current 5th grade Students
The thoughtful placement of students in learning communities is an important process. In order to form cohesive learning environments, we rely on feedback from parents and teachers. As we create classroom placement, our goal is to balance the needs of individuals and groups of learners. Additionally, we consider the academic and social-emotional profile of the students.
If you would like to provide us with information to consider regarding your child's placement, please complete this form. Your input will be reviewed and considered by Skokie administrators as we work on class placement for 6th grade. While we are unable to accommodate specific teacher requests, we value your input and are interested in hearing about a learning environment that is a best fit for your child.
Health Information for Current 5th grade Families:
Dear 5th Grade Parent:
We look forward to seeing your students in the fall as our new sixth graders! Please note that we have an important health requirement for all entering 6th grade students. Please submit a recent physical exam with vaccinations for your student on our “State of IL Certificate of Child Health Examination” form. This may be uploaded at any time from now until school starts in the Fall. A recent dental exam is also needed. Please make your appointments now, before slots become unavailable! Our district website provides instructions using the link below.

Current 6th grade Students:
In the next week, the Washburne team will be reaching out to our current 6th grade families to invite input for Washburne class placement, and share information on the transition process.
Lunch Account Information for Current 6th Grade Families
On Friday, April 21st, all 6th graders will visit Washburne to learn more about elective options for next year. One of the highlights of the day is that our students are able to eat lunch in the Washburne cafeteria, either bringing a lunch from home or purchasing a lunch from Washburne's food service provider.
If your child is planning to purchase a lunch, we recommend setting up a lunch account now through mymealtime.com. All 6th grade families will receive an individual email on Tuesday with specific directions to set up a lunch account for your child. If you set up a lunch account, your child can use it to buy lunch on April 21st, and any unused funds will carry over to 7th grade. You also will not need to set up the account again over the summer.
Students are able to use cash to purchase food as well, but we have found that using the mealtime system is more convenient for students and parents. In order to purchase food using the account, Washburne will distribute temporary id cards to students on April 21st.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Ben Horwitz, Assistant Principal at Washburne.
Health and Wellness Day
On April 28th, 2023 Skokie School of The Winnetka Public Schools will be holding a Health and Wellness Day. Skokie School has a 5th/6th student population of over 400+ students. Our day is fully dedicated and focused on healthy habits and understanding.
We have four, forty minute sessions, two in the morning and two in the afternoon. We’d love for you to present for the entire day. The Kinetic Wellness team realizes that your time is valuable and presenting the whole day might not be possible. If you are unable to attend the whole day, we would also encourage you to share the day’s presentations with a colleague and split time between the two of you. Or you could choose to participate in the morning or afternoon.
We often get questions about the content of your presentation.
Talk about your speciality
How you became interested in your field
What systems/specialties you treat
Why these systems are important to your overall health
Tools of the trade
Pictures, x-rays , or any other visuals/hands on materials associated with your profession
General well-being
The more interactive your presentation, the more engaged your 5th and 6th grade audience will be.
During our last Health and Wellness Day in 2017 we had presentations from dermatologists, sleep specialists, asthma/allergist, pediatricians, optometrist, orthopedics, Red Cross, Winnetka Fire Department, Winnetka Park District, Chicago bears trainers, dietician/nutritionist, American Cancer Association, Bullying/Peer Pressure, Grand Foods/Whole Foods (healthy snacks), hematologists, cardiologists, yoga, and more.
If you are interested contact us at Skokie School. If you know of someone who would be willing to donate their time, expertise and knowledge for this day, please pass this on. If you have any questions don’t hesitate in contacting one of us regarding Health and Wellness day.

Exploring Skokie
LIT: In Lit the past couple of weeks students have been exploring six-word memoirs. The legend is that the six-word memoir began when Earnest Hemmingway was challenged to write a novel in six words. He wrote: “Baby shoes, for sale, never worn.” Thus the legend of the six-word memoir was born. We talked about the power of choosing just the right words and then also explored how we could add depth to our memoirs by choosing copyright-free images to go along with our work. We reviewed concepts such as negative space, font choice, and color combinations to make our images sing. Lastly, we shared our work on a community Padlet where we were able to leave positive comments to our writers. Here is a sampling of some of the work our students created.

A Message from The Winnetka Public Schools, the Village, and The Winnetka Police Department
This spring, a traffic study will be conducted on and around Crow Island Elementary School’s campus in order to determine the most efficient traffic flow when construction is underway during both the Stormwater Improvements Project and work related to the referendum, which commence in spring 2024. The traffic study will utilize cameras on poles set up at these Crow Island-area locations (between Glendale and Locust; and Mt. Pleasant and Cherry Streets) during the first week of April 2023. Further information on recommended traffic pattern changes, possible road closures, and other relevant information will be shared with residents prior to the launch of these projects.
