Pastor Rich's Weekly Devotional
Myth of Measurement
For many people, the business mindset predominates their thinking: the only worthwhile goals are those that can be seen, touched, and, most of all, counted.
In medical triage, for example, we measure the severity of one’s condition to decide who should be treated first. In business and public policy, we continuously measure the value of products and services and respond accordingly.
The value of measurement cannot be equally applied to things of the heart and soul, however. Attempting to find satisfaction in all of life from the numbers you ring up is ultimately no more successful than making survival your goal.
Meaning cannot be measured. Yet we live immersed in a world of measurement so pervasive that even many of our religious institutions measure success by market share. Who’s winning in the competition to attract adherents? The mega-church? The church of blue jeans worship? Another faith group?
Of course, measurement is a useful device, but it cannot tell us what makes life worth living. Was Jesus’ life any less valuable than others because it lasted somewhat more than thirty years on this earth?
We cannot measure that which is of essential value.
Every Mom or Grandma who has taught a child to read should be praised. What a lifelong gift they have given. We never ask, “why didn’t you teach 1,200 children to read?”
Every person who has shared the love of Christ with another has been faithful. The heart and mind of the recipient will never be the same. We never ask, “why didn’t you show the love of Christ to another 14,708 people?”
Praise God for every single act of generosity, kindness, devotion, and faith. For in these attributes of God we find meaning that lasts for eternity.

We would like to thank the wonderful people who helped to make Jack’s funeral so memorable. We counted about 30 church members who worked together to make the service and luncheon so special. We are grateful for the many people who sent get well cards during Jack’s illness. We have also been comforted by reading the sweet sympathy cards that we have received.
We feel very fortunate to be surrounded by so much love and support during this difficult time.

Historical Field Trips- New UPDATE 5-3- 24 from Gary
May - Our next trip will be to Belle Isle on Saturday, May 18th. The plan is to meet at church at 9 am, drive to and around the park, visit the historic Aquarium (built in 1904), tour the Detroit Yacht Club (built in 1923), have a group lunch in the park, and then drive home. For those of you who want to extend your day on the island, you can visit the Dossin Museum and/or walk, ride, or canoe around the park. The cost will be in the $10-$20 range. Drivers will get paid for gas. A state park passport (on your license plate) is required to enter the island. If you want to go and/or drive, please email garyforhan@ameritech.net.
June - On Saturday, June 15th we will visit the Underground Railroad Living Museum. SAVE THE DATE!
July - On Saturday, July 13th, we will be going to the Detroit Tigers baseball game at Comerica Park. The Tigers are playing the Dodgers at 1 pm. I have purchased 44 tickets at $35 each. I am planning on arranging bus transportation to and from Comerica Park so you don’t have to worry about driving and parking. Because the Tigers require payment in full at least 30 days in advance, I need everyone who wants to go to claim their tickets and pay for them as soon as possible. If you want to go, please email garyforhan@ameritech.net with your name and the number of tickets you need. Then, make out a check to OLCCP, write “Tiger Tickets” in the memo line, and drop it off in the church office. The first 44 requests will get the tickets. If more than 44 tickets are requested, I will start a waiting list. If less than 44 tickets are paid for by June 1st, I will return the unpurchased tickets to the Tigers.
If you have any questions, please email Gary at garyforhan@ameritech.net.

The purpose of the Cultivating the Gift of Preaching Initiative is to strengthen the witness of the Church to the good news of Jesus Christ, by identifying, training, and providing ongoing support to emerging preachers. Across the eleven presbyteries of the Synod, there are numerous ruling elders and other church leaders who are called and gifted to preach the good news. The aim of the Initiative is to cultivate these gifts through rigorous training in biblical interpretation, reformed theology, and sermon preparation. The Initiative aims to add 140 or more trained preachers across Synod over four18-month training cycles, beginning in June of 2024 and through 2028.
