The Bulldog Bulletin
November 4, 2024
From the Principal's Desk..
Dear Families,
As we enter the month of November, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the great strides our school has made since the beginning of the year. With the season of gratitude upon us, I am thankful for our dedicated staff, wonderful students, and supportive families who contribute daily to our vibrant learning community.
Upcoming Events:
Fall Back: Sunday, November 4, 2024 (at 2:00am) we turn our clocks back one hour.
Veterans Day Breakfast: We will be honoring our veterans on November 8th at 8:15 AM with a breakfast here at Dr. Brown ES. Families are welcome to attend.
Election Day: There will be no school for students, Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Please Vote.
Thanksgiving Break: There will be no school from November 27th to December 1st. We hope you enjoy this time with your families.
Instructional Focus:
This month, we are continuing our focus on standards-based instruction. Our teachers are working hard to ensure that every student is mastering the essential skills and knowledge in each subject area. This approach allows us to support individual learning needs and challenge students at their own pace.
Gratitude Wall:
As part of our efforts to promote a positive school culture, we will be creating a "Gratitude Wall" where students and staff can share what they are thankful for. It’s a great opportunity to foster a sense of community and kindness.
Attendance Matters:
We would like to remind families of the importance of regular school attendance. Every day counts! Consistent attendance helps students stay on track academically and socially. If your child is going to be absent, please notify the office as early as possible.
A Final Note:
As always, I am incredibly proud of the work being done in our school. Let’s continue to work together to make this a successful year for all our students. If you ever have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
-Mrs. Lewis

Math Moment: Turkey Time Tallying!
This Thanksgiving, why not bring a little math fun to the table? As you gather with family, here are a few ways to practice math together:
1. Turkey Dinner Tally: Have your child count up different Thanksgiving items – like the number of mashed potato servings, pies, or even cranberry sauce dishes. For older kids, they can practice addition by tallying everyone’s plate items and finding a total for the table.
2. Gratitude Graph: After sharing what you’re thankful for, turn your words into a graph! Write down the ideas shared (like family, pets, food, or nature) and have everyone vote for their favorites. Then, create a simple bar graph to see which one “wins.”
3. Pumpkin Pie Fractions: Before serving dessert, have your child help slice up a pie or cake! Talk about fractions as you cut. Can they find a half, a quarter, or an eighth? This activity is a tasty way to learn about parts of a whole.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with learning, laughter, and love!
Reading Tips from Our Reading Coach, Ms. White
Greetings Bulldog Family,
"Research shows that explicitly teaching vocabulary can measurably improve reading comprehension — if we teach the right words well enough." (Shanahan) Since teaching takes place at home as well as in the classroom, please take a few minutes to read the article from Reading Rockets, written by Timothy Shanahan, entitled, Five Key Principles for Effective Vocabulary Instruction, to find out how you can help improve your children's comprehension by improving their vocabulary.

Testing & Gifted Ed Coach, Ms. Correll
Welcome to the 2nd Quarter! All students in the 2nd grade will complete the CogAT Screener test, as well as selected students in third grade through fifth grade; beginning on November 4th, 2024. This test is to be completed on the computer and will test the students in three different categories – Verbal, Non-Verbal, and Quantitative. Each test gets a score and those scores, along with teacher input, will determine if a student should receive Gifted and Talented services through their teacher and the LRT. If your child is being tested, a letter should have gone home to you to explain the test and scoring. If a child performs well on the CogAT Screener, then they will also complete the CogAT Post Screener in December. Once both tests have been administered and scored, the student’s CogAT scores will go home to the parents with an explanation of what the scores mean.
Students are performing well with the Gifted and Talented Services work. All students in these groups are working with their group partners to perform tasks in reading and math. Students receiving Gifted and Talented services in reading need to practice working with Theme Statements from the stories they read, as well as adding specific, “quoted” evidence from the story to support their answers. Students receiving Gifted and Talented services in 4th and 5th grade math should practice multiplication of fractions and identifying equivalent fractions. Students in 3rd grade math should practice finding the perimeter and area of objects.
