Guidance Message
Mrs. Shelly Fransoo
Welcome back to an exciting new school year!
Your high school experience can help you prepare for the world of work. It is important to start, or in
many cases, continue your career planning pathway. I do hope that you will take full advantage of the career day opportunities planned for you this year. In addition, I encourage you to make an
appointment or stop by my office to ask questions and share your plans. Parents are welcome to!
Grade 12s – fall is a busy time for open house tours. This is a great opportunity for you to explore post-secondary campuses. The widely attended U of S Open House is September 20. The career guidance department will be offering rides to students for this experience. Sign up with Mrs. Fransoo. In terms of applying to post-secondary institutions, it is important to note that some post-secondary programs are a “First-Qualified, First-Admitted” admission. This means the earlier you apply, the greater the chance you will have to get into the program. These applications are likely open already. Check your intended program for deadlines and admission requirements.
Grade 11s – please note that your Grade 11 marks are especially important for early admission
applications and some entrance scholarships when applying for post-secondary schooling next year.
Grade 8s, 9s & 10s – There are many tools you can use to help you start thinking about your future career. If you would like assistance with this, please feel free to ask for help.
You may have noticed that students and parents are part of a “Guidance Group” in Edsby. This resource will give you access to valuable information. We are working to update the information so be sure to check it often for any new or updated material.
Braided Journeys
Mr. Jean Fauchon
Welcome everyone to the new school year. I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Be sure to stop by and see the new room. We will be hosting a Round Dance this fall. Stay tuned for a date and hope to see you all there. We would like to thank BATC for their generous donation last year to help us run our cultural events.
The Servery
Crystal Wandler
Hello and welcome back from the Servery! We are excited to be back! Here are some tidbits about the Servery!
Menu- We are open before classes each morning and have breakfast items available such as breakfast wraps, breakfast sandwiches, bagels, muffins, fruit, yogurt and berries, as well as various snacks and drinks.
We have a different lunch special each day that come with a salad or soup for $5.00. Our specials are posted on EDSBY each week and our salads and soups change regularly. Homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps and more are also available individually at lunch. We only accept cash.
Pre-ordering - any staff or students who have a meeting or other engagement at noon that doesn't give them enough time to wait in line for lunch can pre-order and pre-pay before lunch. Their food will be ready for them at the till when the bell rings.
Making an account - Staff and students can leave cash or cheques at the Servery on an account. We keep track of the accounts and let you know when it is getting low.
There are also gift certificates available.
Have any questions? Come by and see us!
The counselling team
Mrs. Atcheynum & Mr. Quijada-Sawitsky
The counselling team consists of two full-time counsellors. This year, we have Ms.
Whyte returning to her role as a counsellor but she is returning as Mrs. Atcheynum.
We also welcome Mr. Quijada-Sawitsky to his first full year on the counselling team.
Both Mrs. Atcheynum and Mr. Quijada-Sawitsky’s offices are located on the second
floor in the offices adjacent to the chapel.
All students attending John Paul II have access to counselling during the school hours.
You can access this support by self-referring, asking a teacher to refer you or having
your parent or guardian refer you. This is a simple process; all you must do is email,
Edsby message or call one of the counsellors.
Throughout September we are planning to spend some time in the grade 8 classrooms
along with our P.O.P. partner, Ms. Fauchon. We plan to present the “Ready, Set, Go!”
presentation we’ve developed which provides grade 8 students with some information
and skills that will hopefully help them find success throughout their entire high school
experience.
We wish all students and their families a very happy and safe year!
Mental Health Capacity Building
Ms. Rena Fauchon
Welcome Back Everyone! I am super excited to welcome you all to the POP Room. This room is a part of the Mental Health Capacity Building Program here at JPII. Breakfast and lunch are served up here and are free for those students that need it.
The MCHB program will be offering several programs this year for students, staff and parents.
September we are looking forward to welcoming all the students and especially the grade 8’s, who are new to our community. I, as well as the school counselors will be going into the grade 8 homerooms to talk about the resources we have to offer in the school and to help them get organized for the year.
Our Ready, Set, Go presentation will help students to feel comfortable and ready for a fun and successful year here at JPII. Your grade 8 student will be given a day timer to help the organization school and life, as well as a package. Please ask them about this.
Please feel free to stop by the POP Room to say hi. I look forward to seeing you all. Have a great year!
Chaplaincy
Father Greg
A huge welcome back to our John Paul II students as we begin our 2024-2025 school year. Once again, our Chaplaincy department will offer a full range of Faith activities that highlight and focus our commitment to a faith based education for our students. We will continue with our faith activities and have many moments when as an entire school we gather to celebrate.
To our new Grade 8 students, please feel free to join as a faith representative, and see Fr. Greg for details. As we journey forward as a school family of faith, we rely on Christ to be our pattern and guide. St. John Paul II, pray for us.
Social Justice League
Father Greg
We will once again run the Social Justice League at JPII. These dedicated students are essential in reaching out to help others in our school, and in our wider community. Last year we had several very successful food and clothing drives, and look forward to serving others as we do so again. This gives our students the means to help others and live the Gospel values.
