Winter is well and truly upon us with cold, crisp mornings typical of Hawke's Bay winters. It is important during these months we keep well, especially with the surge in flu cases.
It is great to see winter sports in full swing with very pleasing results right across the field. The local Hastings Boys'/Napier Boys' derby Saturday week saw a win in 8 games out of 9 and the 1st XV retain the Challenge Trophy.
2022 has seen significant disruption to learning and we strongly encourage our young men to put a little extra effort in over the next term. We have five hours of teaching in a school day, maximise these five hours, make them the most valuable of the day.

HB Wordskills Electrical Competition
Horticulture
The year 9 Horticulture class recently had a trip to an orchard in Havelock North. The boys spent time with two local leaders in the Industry, learning how to pick and prune fruit trees. The boys did themselves proud and we have been invited back again during spring to look at other aspects of fruit growing. Ka pai e tama ma!
Rangatahi Business Challenge 2022
The Rangatahi Business Challenge was held at Hastings Boys’ High School on June 21st. We have been involved in this challenge for the past four years, and it has evolved to a one day programme for Year 10 rangatahi to learn about business and enterprise, develop work-ready skills, and connect with local Māori entrepreneurs who are sharing their talents, passion and skills across Aotearoa and the world.
Thirty Year 10 students were involved in the challenge, where they worked in small groups to identify a problem, come up with a solution, build a prototype then present this solution to a panel of judges. We were fortunate to have Alex Tulou (old boy) and Quaid Crawford (Head Boy) as our judges; Quaid was involved in the program as a Year 10 student himself.
Congratulations to Elite Hustle (Neeco Hape, Panapa Lambert, Manaia Kereru-Crackett and Tipene Clark) who were awarded first place in the challenge. They identified the problem of athletes returning to sport too soon after injury, and came up with an online programme to support this. Thank you to Seda and Jesse from the Young Enterprise Scheme for facilitating this day.
Taekwondo - Paradorn Maidens 10Bc
Paradorn is now the New Zealand Champion in the Boys 12 - 14 under 60kg division for Kumite (fighting) and he came 3rd in Junior Individual Black Belt kata and 2nd in Junior team kata.
At the tournament he also got to meet other competitors from around New Zealand and some competitors from Australia and make some new friendships.
New Zealand Careers Expo Napier
The New Zealand Careers Expo was at Pettigrew Green Arena on 21st June and about 50 Year 13 students attended.
A mixture of exhibitors from Universities to the Armed forces and local and National businesses provided our year 13 students with a taste of what is on offer for them when they leave school at the end of this year.
Interactive displays and knowledgeable advisers gave our students important advice and information to make future career decisions.
Careers - Futureopoly Trip
I wanted to attend this event so I could find a career that interests me. I found talking to people who worked at these businesses very informative as they gave me some insight into what they do on a daily basis. I was surprised to find that most of the jobs offered training or apprenticeships, so there is no need to have much prior knowledge to get a job there.

Hastings Youth Council
The Hastings Youth Council invited parents to their Council meeting recently.
The photo is of Bowen Steffert and Jackson McKay at the meeting in Council chambers with the Mayor.
Jackson presented on his sub committee - Community and Youth Engagement. It was great to see Hastings Boys' High School students representing on a city level.
It was a pity that others (Riley Bogard -Allan, Monte Timu and Marcus Laiseni were absent) but our school has the most members on the council.
Mission - Sustainable
On Tuesday June 14 10 Year 10 students travelled to the Napier War Memorial Convention Centre for Mission:Sustainable. This was run by the Young Enterprise Trust, and is a cross curricular design thinking challenge in which students work in teams to develop innovative solutions to real world issues being faced by the Primary Sector.

Interhouse Tug of War
The House Tug of War proved to be a huge event for the powerhouse Heretaunga team across most year levels. It was a very loud, very exciting event that everyone seemed to enjoy.
ANZAC Hockey Tournament in Hamilton
At the start of the season a very young 1st XI Hockey team travelled to St Paul's Collegiate in Hamilton to compete at the ANZAC Tournament. We played against top 1st XI Hockey teams from across New Zealand including Hamilton Boys', Whangarei Boys', Hutt International, King's College and Westlake Boys'. The team learned a lot, growing as a group and individually.
With our team consisting of seven Year 9's, six year 10's and only two senior out field players the future is promising as we lose only three players in the next four years! The travelling team was:

Orienteering Brothers
Hawke's Bay Schools' Long Course Championship 2022 were held on Sunday 15 May.
Both Joshua and Henry raced in this event. Joshua in the Juniors and Henry in the Seniors. Both courses were set in hilly farmland and the running was hard due to the marshy and steep terrain.
The competition was hard because they were racing against participants who have podiumed at regional and national events.
Both came third in their events and are looking forward to representing the school at Nationals in the next school holidays.
Year 9 Akina Basketball
Over the recent school holidays, a few of the young men in the Year 9 Akina basketball team participated in the Hoop Nation Junior Showcase in Whanganui. Four players were a part of the Under 13 boys championship squad "Jellyfish" based in Hawke's Bay.
It was a high quality tournament with many talented players from around the country involved, but Bryan Tamoe (BJ) was named Most Valuable Player of his respective age group. He was supported by honourable contributions from Maraki Edwards, Kaea Wharemate and Kingston Reid.
Another major event was the Under 14 New Zealand Camp in Rotorua. This was a high calibre development opportunity for these young men who were selected for this camp following their representative season last year. Both Tama Edwards-Butler and Carter Ah Kiong represented themselves and their families with pride and we hope to see many more Akina basketballers move through the Basketball New Zealand Pathway.
Pink Shirt Day
Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against homophobic bullying, after a peer was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. In Aotearoa, Pink Shirt Day works to raise awareness in schools, workplaces, communities and whānau where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.
