State Law and Required Attendance
The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and staff care about the well-being and academic achievement of each student. We know that daily attendance is one of the most powerful predictors of school success and on-time graduation. Our goal is to have every student at school on time, every day.
State law for mandatory attendance, called the Becca Bill, requires children from age 8 to 17 to attend a public school, private school or a district-approved home school program. Children who are 6 or 7 years old are not required to be enrolled in school. However, if parents enroll their 6 or 7 year old, the student must attend full time. And, school districts are required, under RCW 28.225.020 and RCW 28A.225.030 to take a series of actions when students accrue absences.
Also by law, we notify parents/guardians when their student is absent. If a student reaches a certain number of unexcused absences the school will contact parents/guardians to create a plan to support good attendance. Find information about excuse and unexcused absences, tardies and attendance procedures in the district’s Student & Family Information Guide and Policy 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences.
Character Trait of the Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic Americans in the United States. It honors the diverse backgrounds of Latinos, encompassing their roots from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This month-long celebration highlights the achievements of Hispanic individuals in arts, sciences, politics, and beyond, emphasizing their profound impact on American society. It serves as a reminder of the strength found in cultural diversity and promotes understanding and appreciation for the Hispanic community's integral role in shaping the nation's identity and heritage. This year’s theme: “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” Learn More Here: National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers

Strong school attendance matters!
Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success – both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous or risky behavior, and have a better chance of graduating from high school.
Did you know?
Missing 10% of the school year is considered chronically absent. That's only two days a month or 18 days in a school year.
By 6th grade, high absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with schoolwork, dealing with a bully, or facing other potentially serious challenges.
By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
We know that there are a wide variety of reasons that students are absent from school, from health concerns to transportation challenges. There are many people in our schools prepared to help you if you or your student face challenges in getting to school regularly or on time. Please contact your school if you need support.
Bond measure on November ballot; by the numbers video
Now that school has begun, you’ve likely seen and heard more about the district’s upcoming bond measure on the Nov. 5 ballot — Proposition 1: K-12 Expanded Student Capacity, School Improvement & Safety Upgrades.
If you’re a numbers person, here’s a quick video that conveys the need for the bond in relation to our current overcrowding — 9 of 14 schools are over 100% capacity, and 4 more are over 95% capacity.
The bond package, created by a community advisory committee, has projects that reach every region of the district and will positively impact every school and all students districtwide. For more information about Prop. 1, read the fact sheet and learn about the bond projects. Keep checking
